We worked cattle Friday and one of the calves that looked only day or two old was weak so we left him under a tree til we were thru. Went back to pens late that afternoon to check and still there and hadn't moved at all. Tried to get him up and he could not stand. Brought him to house and gave him some kick start which he took easily even though we had to hold him up while he drank. Yesterday he drank his bottles easily and can now get up on his own. But his eyes started glassing over and he appears to be mostly blind now except able to make out shadows. I've done some research and sounds like Vitamin A deficiency. He also appears to have stiff joints. I could wait see vet tomorrow but I can buy some Vitamin A D today. Anyone know what the dosage for this might be?

Yes I see since I just picked it up but didn't know if I should dose a little more due to his symptoms and/or more often. Have you dealt with this issue?

No sorry, we see some deficiencies in grass cattle coming into the feedlot, but nothing life threatening and its corrected with our feed and mineral program.

I personally never go over dosing instructions, nor has our vet or nutritionalist ever suggested it.

I do feed my bottle calves an oral VIT D if they are in the barn a lot, it keeps them much brightet but I have never had a calf do down and blind without it.

I would wounder if there is not more going on with him. Good luck hope he gets feeling better soon.

I did Google it and there were a lot of different answers . I know there are quite a few on here that have cattle so I thought someone else might have had this problem. I went ahead and gave him normal dosage so hope it works. He is taking bottle really well and stands up by himself now just the eyes I'm worried about now.

We actually had this exact thing happen.  We started bottle feeding him but kept him with his Mom and fed her too.  She was old.  At about 3 days old we were sure he was blind, eyes were white and had discharge.  We started putting some eye gel antibiotic treatment )it was for a horse but we figured it could not hurt).  I think he was not seeing anything at all, but maybe shadows.  We could call him and he would come to toward the voice (for his bottle) but  could not find us.
Anyway after about 10 days he was fine.  Eyes started clearing at about 3 or 4 days after the gel we put in his eyes.   We finished the tube maybe 2 weeks but he turned into a really nice little bull with no eye problems.  I'm not sure if it was the additional bottle and nutrition or the eye cream but he can see fine now.

Thats great hes standing on his own now, I bet once he get the nutrition that he was needing he'll just keep on getting better.

Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment is the best for treating eye infections, I use it on my goats and always had great results.

Thats the ointment I used. Once he started getting stronger, it was harder to put in his eyes, but we did it. Good luck, let us know how he does.

You might try to give him some Thiamine, it will help with his sight. We had a steer when I worked in the feedlot that was blind his eyes were glassed over, the vets gave him Thiamine and it cleared up in a few days, they said he had deficiency and that is what cause his blindness.

That's interesting. I really believe it's a deficiency and not infection. He has a clear discharge only. I gave him vitamin A & d yesterday. Better today but still not seeing very good. Going to vet tomorrow if not significantly better. Thanks for posting.

I really think ours was a deficiency not an infection, but we wanted to try to help him and figured, nothing to lose.  He really got better quick.  I had even contacted a few people to find out if we would be able to sell him at the market if he was blind.  He will probably be fine I bet.

I have given a second dose od vit AD to new calves that seem blind and they have come around to seeing again. I don't know if it was the extra AD or just timing and coincidence, but it didn't hurt them either.
