Eye Ulcer

Been treating and eye ulcer for not quite 2 wks now in one of my mares. Noticed it one evening after a week of 40-50 mph Kansas winds, so sure she just got some kind of debris in it, flushed it with saline and ran to vet the next morning to pick up chloramphenicol drops and a tube of terramycin
(ya right
). Anyway spent the weekend trying to put drops and ointment in, which Im sure some know how easy that was. Took her down to vet to have them look her over, ulcer still good sized, so decided it was best to put a lavage in, so have a better chance of actually getting drops in her eye. Treated for a week with chloramphenicol drops 3 to 4 times a day along with just a few days of drops for pain with that, also giving her a little bit of banamine each day
(I only did for 3 because she acted like she was feeling much better
). Anyway took her back to vet this week
(1 week later
), ulcer is smaller but still there, so we left lavage in and now treating still with chloramphenicol and she added serum that Im putting in after the drops, doing this 3 to 4 times a day, as I work full time, but luckily live 5 miles away so run home at lunch to treat. I will take her back down tomorrow
(Saturday
) to see if we are gaining, I guess my question is, what else could or should I be trying? I've actually been lucky enough to not have to deal with this before and was expecting a faster recovery since eyes are known to heal quickly, but this week she seems like its bothering her worse than last. Suggestions?
Thanks.

I have treated a few ulcers for a 2-3 months before, as long as you keep heading in the right direction I wouldn't worry too much.

We had a lavage for 8 weeks on my horse. I did the meds 5 x a day and feed herbs to him . I talked to Silver Lineing and Standard Process and followed their suggestions. We weren't sure we could save the eye because he also had a fungal infection. We did save it and he has limited site, but I have been told by several vets that we did a good job and we were lucky to have saved his eye. I think the herbal stuff helped the healing.
