I have a horse that only paws when in the trailer, no where else. I treated him for ulcers and give him an ulcer prevent and no more pawing.

Kick chain works like a charm on my trailer kicker (like kick off the back door type of kicking!).
He hauls quiet as a mouse with the chain on. sometimes I do chain on both hind legs, usually just on one.
Hope this can help you too! Good luck!

If he/she is healthy and like other post said ulcers are not the problem (the horse could just be getting nervous/upset stomach in trailer) then the only thing you can really do is hobble them, only while they are in the trailer. I had a horse that would kick if ANYTHING touched her while she was standing in the trailer. We just tried to make sure there was always something behind her to stop her from kicking another horse, and in a slant made sure she went in the stud stall.

I did try a pair of kick chains but they weren't tight enough and she got them off however she only kicked twice. Do you have a pic of your kick chains? Ive never hobbled one in the trailer so that makes me super nervous however if someone can tell me the best way to go about this I will do it.
I'm thinking that she is just really nervous in the trailer I got a hold of the previous owner and they stated she didn't kick in the trailer but at some point she fell and went under the divider so she had a wreck! I am thinking this is the problem and she doesn't like feeling confined.

I need to add that I also give him a THE calming cookie before or right after I load him. I think that really helps with his anxiety.

After reading your post about the trailer accident, I had a horse who fought the trailer, but as long as I took corners very sloowwly, he did fine. Going from a stop to regular speed took me twice as long as most people, but it really helped him. I also will not use the dividers if I am only hauling one horse, that really seems to help the horse I have now.

I bought a mare with this issue. I would just use a small chain on both of her back legs ( I made them myself) just long enough so when she would lift her leg to kick it would hit her on the back of the hoof. I also made a set of horse shoes to fit around her ankles. They both worked very well- and she only would kick in the stall or trailer. She was ulcer free, and completely healthy. Just a huzzy at times :)

Kick chains are very easy to make, all you need is a small dog collar and some chain.

What kind of trailer do you haul her in? I used to haul mine in a two horse bumper pull straight load and she could not see out. Bought a slant with drop downs on it and never kicked again. I stopped hauling her at one point because pulling her was so miserable. I even hobbled her and she figured a way around that.

Friend owns a mare that kicked in every single trailer she tried from slant to straight to reverse to stock. We're talking put her leg through a rear window and a stock slate more than once. Kicking chains seemed to encourage her.

They had to modify her 4H trailer to have a box stall in the back so she can be tied facing backwards. That is the only thing that solved it. Obviously I suggest other options first.
