Gelding with broken shoulder!?

Anyone have any experience with horses having a broken/fractured shoulder? I have a 5yr old DFP gelding who broke his shoulder 1 year ago after hitting a pipe fence at a run. The break has healed well but causes him to paddle his leg out when he walks. Vet says his prognosis is great and expects a full recovery, but no more barrel training. Lots of long trotting and loping in straight lines to get him picking his leg up. My space here is limited so that is very difficult to do, I am doing what I can with him but I don't see much improvement and losing the motivation to keep riding him. I am looking to hear from anyone who has similar experience and what type of exercises may have been used, what the outcome was, etc.!

I have a mid 5 figure prospect standing in the brood mare patch carrying baby #2 because of a broken shoulder as a 3 yr old. Not only a 3 yr old but a 3 yr old that was less than 30 days from making her debut at OKC.

We had one hit on the road last summer. My husband's ranch gelding. He was put down. The vet wasn't a bit optimistic about recovery where they are even comfortable. Oak was already having issues with his feet/pasterns giving out on him. He may have been that way 1-2 days before we found him. It was heartbreaking.

My best horse broke his shoulder as a 2 YO. He was turned out and I guess a horse fly got on him. He tried to get away from it and attempted to jump a gate. He didn't make the jump and landed on his shoulder. Took him to Rood and Riddle. They xrayed him to find a fractured shoulder. Said that he would be nothing more than a pasture ornament. I had already put so much time and work into the horse that I just had to see what I could do for him. The horse was a very good patient. We put him on stall rest for a year. I fed him some sort of bone growth supplement, can't really remember what it was. When I started exercising him again, a year later, I just took my time with him. He was sound as he could be. Later that year I started teaching him the barrel pattern and by a 4 YO he was starting to exhibition. Later that year became a 1D barrel horse. He is the horse in my profile picture. Good luck with your horse.
