Feeds list minimum protein. This is required by law. Actual protein will always be higher (on all feeds) because you do not want a feed test coming under the labeled amounts. The protein quoted you was actual dry matter protein, which ussually runs 15-16%. On occasion it "could" test up to 17% and would mostly be a testament to the quality of alfalfa that is used (Omnis being 82.5% premium alfalfa and we do not blend bales). As fed protein runs around 14-15% with a moisture content of about 8%. I hope this clears up a few things and gives you a better understanding of feed tags and Omnis, in particular.

What matters in the diet is never feed percentages but total % in the entire ration. Even then protein can be high quality or low quality and protein itself is hardly ever an issue for equines. I would like to point out that good, new growth grass pasture can run 30+ % protein.

So how do you feed it with grain? Are the Mustang Sally ones different than the Omnis? I asked about the complete performance and was told 17%

The omnis complete is a great feed.. once I get my barn built out here, I'm going back to it.. unfortunately, it just doesn't work for me right now and my pasture situation. My horses did extremely well on it. I didn't feed any hay while they were on it. I just added 1lb of my grain a day.
