Both purina products .. Anybody used both or one or the other.. Which one do you believe puts weight on & maintains weight better ? I'm kinda torn between the two .

I think it depends on if your horse can still eat hay well or not. I've been feeding the senior active for a few weeks and I love it! My horse has gained weight and looks great. You don't have to feed as much of the active since it doesn't have the forage included in it.

Mine can all eat hay. 6 yr old , 13 yo & 2 yr old . I like how the regular senior is more safe & digestible .. But so is the active I guess . I know the active has more fat & calories per lb .. Hmm

The active is just as safe. It only has 16% NSC. If you're feeding young horses I might look for a different feed more suited to their needs or feed the active.

I have fed both and prefer the Active because you can feed less. My old gelding does well on both, but with the Active I feed Renew Gold and alfalfa pellets (split into 2 feedings) to make it more cost effective.

Equine Senior and Equine Senior Active are basically the same product. They use the same ingredients. The only real difference in the Active is: 1) Higher concentration of fat giving it a little more energy/lb and 2) Higher concentration of vitamin/mineral pack for a lower feeding rate.

The active is about 25% more energy dense.

Equine Senior is fine for any age horse. The feed companies having all these different formulas and claiming it is for the specific needs of whatever class or type, just marketing. The feeds themselves are not much different from one another and neither are the needs of the horses. You can feed them all the same. Also, I don't personally believe in high fat diets for horses. The Senior Active, fed to the label, is more fat than my liking.

I've used both and never cared for the equine senior. I started to use the active senior and love it. I have fed it to several and it does maintain weight wonderfully.

Me, me, ask me!   lol   I always gave regular Senior to my then 10 year old horse because he didn't look good enough to me, thought it would help.  Fed that to him for several years, before I even realized there was an Active Senior!  Since he isn't really a senior horse and definitely active, I figured I should switch to the Active.  Big mistake.  He got diarrhea and became a bundle of nerves.  Took me a while to figure it out, since I didn't really think there would be that much of a difference.

I'd feed a better brand of Senior if you can. I've fed Progressive and Woody's and Purina. My horses do SO much better on the first two and really drop off on the Purina. Of course Purina is easier to find. Even have one that went off feed on the Purina . . . very much not good.

I know senior can be fed to all ages :) I like feeding senior feeds , I feel they are safer & easier to digest . I may go to the active so I can feed less .. I don't like feeding a bunch of feed , be with grass hay , I find myself feeding about 6-7 lbs a day to keep their weight.
