| Ive decided to try running my mare on previcox instead of dex and other things. I've had one person tell me to give it the morning of. But I've read some things about it taking a few days to kick in. What does everyone do!?! |

| it does take longer to get into their system than bute or banamine. I have used it a LOT and best thing is to do a double dose 3 days out then a singles dose every day before the race, day of, day after. |

| We use Previcox or Bute to help my sons 22 year old horse. It seems like it takes 24 hours before it is fully effective. When we are using the mare on a Saturday, we typically give her a dose on Friday morning, Friday night and then again on Saturday morning.
We can see a little improvement by Friday night, but a much bigger improvement on Saturday. |

Location: Michigan | For a Saturday race I have found best results dosing Thursday and Friday night. Then again a couple hours before race time. |

My 25 year old retired made has been on it daily for probably three years now. She is doing great with it.
For my working horses I start giving it two days out when doing multiple runs on a weekend. |

Is it safe to use long term everyday?
A lot of people will say it is safe, but in all reality it is just safer then long term use of bute or banamine.
The long term adverse effects can be kidney damage, as that is how it is removed from the body, the chances of damage increase if you are giving more then the recommended 57mg.
Bone marrow suppression is also another effect the medication can have, as any NSAID in certain dosages and length of time will suppress bone marrow. This can cause a horse to become anemic, be more susceptible to illness.
Long term use can cause ulcers |

I agree with this 100 percent. I had a gelding on it for a year and a half solid. It did end up causing his death but we had no choice. He had a DDFT tear and severe navicular. We were just trying to make him comfortable to give him some extra time at just being retired so he wouldn't be 3 legged lame and in pain constantly his whole life. He did great then at 18 months on it daily his body started to shut down , liver kidneys colic probably ulcers caused colic. It's labeled for 14 days use at a time so I was aware of the risks and my vet made sure I knew. But I went ahead and put him down at that point he was only 12. But it's a great drug, just long long term it can be just as bad as the others. But sometimes that's my only option. We chose that over 4 grams of bute daily for life on that horse. I am certainly not blaming the previcox. It was used way way way off label at my choice. |

I would be treating for ulcers.
I would also be questioning why the horse needs 40 days of Previcoxx as there are other alternatives depending on why the horse in on Previcoxx, such as a chemical nerve block in a foot which lasts 1-3 months, they can't feel pain but can still feel their foot. |

I agree with this as well. I do use it on horses. I like it since it's a cox 1 inhibitor which is known for less side effects. But, it does cause damage if used constantly long term. My case was in a dog. It was a 14 year old queensland heeler with some pretty severe arthritis. She was uncomfortable and the daily previcox made her feel a ton better. When she was 16 her kidneys started to fail, she lived about another year and passed away. I would not have changed a thing as the previcox kept her comfortable and I know she was old but, I'm sure the daily dosage over that long of a period also contributed to the kidney damage. |

I would speak with your vet regarding ulcer treatment as some of the ulcer treatments will be excreted through the kidneys as well which could put a horse over the edge and into kidney failure. |
