I'm trying to choose between two different hackamores, and am looking for advice from people who have used them! My horse runs a nice pattern, but has no rate and very little whoa coming back down the alley. I don't want to lose the bend and flex I usually have with him, but I need something with more stopping power and control. Between the warner and the stivers, what would you recommend?

Have you tried a Clampit hackamore? Maybe the nose band will get his attention?

I'm not sure that I would switch to a hackamore for more control. Simply because if he puts his nose in the air you have no control at all. Plus you want to ride a hackamore with bump and release pressure. If you continuously pull on one you will also have little control. I would maybe try a combo and see if that may work. You will add nose pressure for more control and by still having a bit with a gag you will keep your bend.

I have tried him in a combo bit, he just braces against it and runs right through it. His dentist did point out to me last time I had his teeth checked that he has a lot of extra flesh on the bars of his mouth, and it very likely is pinched between the bit and teeth. No matter where I adjust the bit, this is still a problem. (short of giving him a perma-grin) I think there's a good chance he might simply be more comfortable in a hackamore, and respond to it better. At least that's the hope :) I do ride with very light hands. He rates better with a curb bit, but I lose all his bend. These two looked like they might be a happy medium, because they allow for bend but still have the whoa.. and won't pinch his mouth. Thoughts?

I ride just nearly every horse I own in a hackamore. I have several types- however my favorite is a Jim Warner or a Turley. I will say that sometimes I have to remind them to respect the nose band every once and a while. Maybe some one rein stops will be a helpful reminder? I also attached a photo of the custom made Turley.

ETA- The Turley has a different feel which I'm sure the Clampit does too. I like the feel of the Turley vs the JW

If I had to pick between the 2, I'd pick the Warner. My experience with a mare that got ****ed off and wanted to push through bits and other hacks, the ladybug hack was what got her attention and still gave flex and bend. Maybe it would only work that way on this mare, but for her it worked.

What are you currently running this horse in?
I love Jim Warner hacks and did not like the Stivers I had at one point.

Take a look at the ladybug hack. My favorite on a horse that needs a little extra whoa.

Love my Jim Warner hackamore. My horse is free runner off the track, he also rides good in curb bit. He runs freer in the hackamore.

I'll second the Clampitt hack. Just about everything I have will ride in it. I've got one starting the pattern that I'm not sure will every ride in anything else. She loves her Clampitt.

agreed with this.

My OTTB mare was very anxious and braced with any bit (mostly with speed). I switched to a Jim Warner and knew immediately that a hack is better suited for her. However, on this horse, I lost some flex and she wasn't rating/bending in the turn with the JW (and I didn't like her nose being irritated by the rope and lost rate if I put vet wrap over the nose).

I picked up a knock off ladybug hack on Amazon - rode her all week with it around the house just getting her used to the new feel. I ran her in it on Saturday and WOW - big difference. I will say that you need to be VERY light handed with the ladybuy so if you're strong handed I wouldn't recommend. I'm going to wrap the steel nose in smooth electrical tape to take some of the "bite" out to see if I still get the same results.
