Location: Silver Lake, MN | I'm struggling with how to set up my permanent dry lots at our house. I have 2 mares, a gelding and a weanling (undetermined colt/filly) I will have through the winter. I have a mare with PSSM she is on dry lot all summer. The gelding is able to be out on pasture and the mare and weanling (not related) will be new additions. I really have not had good luck putting mares and geldings together, but we live in MN and trying to keep costs down as well will tank heaters. Do I put 2 and 2 together? Put them all together? I hate herd bound horses and will be able to seperate out in the summer as needed. Just trying to get some others opinions before we start putting posts in. |

Location: Where the long tails flow, ND | I have 1 dry lot and 5 horses with 1 mini, 2 Geldings and the rest are mares. Everyone lives together peacefully, for the most part! I can open the dry lot up to the pasture and then leave both pens open or close them off if needed.
I would think everyone would be ok together as long as you monitor and chase with whips if needed the first little while LOL
None of mine are herdbound, and if they pretend to be I remind them they aren't |

| We have 5 horses and 2 dry lots. The dry lots are about 30 x 50 with an overhang off of the barn. The 2 dry lots allows us to separate the two horses that don't get along. Depending on the size of the dry lots, you could have problems with horses not getting along. We still have to tie up at least one horse in each lot at feeding time so that each horse gets their own feed and supplements.
We have one mare and 4 geldings. The mare does cause a little bit of drama, but she does just fine as long as we keep her with the right set of geldings. |

Location: Silver Lake, MN | I have not had good luck with just 2 horses kept together if one is insecure and my mare is if it's just her and the gelding. I have not had as many issues with 3 or more it seems like they settle into a herd environment more and don't get as attached to one particular horse. I will have 2 different options for shelter areas and I also have stalls I can bring them into if needed especially at feeding time as I do feed different supplements.

Location: MI | We have 4 horses and a mini. The old man is stalled at night, otherwise they're dry lotted together in the winter. They are fine. The ones in the field holler sometimes when others are taken out, but the ones out and riding don't. |

| We have 6 mares and two gelding which run together... Our yearlings are separated.... We have our big pasture which enters into a large dry lot. We have 3 smaller lots beside the big lot. All I can say is you should have gates which connect them all! This comes in SO handy for separating...weaning.....all sort of situations. All our horses are quiet and handles regularly but sometimes we need to run them in as a group into a smaller pen for whatever reason.... Good luck! |

Have your existing mare and gelding been around babies before? Plenty of adult horses, do NOT give babies a "free pass" to act like BABIES. They will treat them like a strange ADULT horse. Which can be VERY dangerous to the little one. |
