We want to take a trip out west this summer. Would you choose to go to Calgary or Cheyenne rodeo? What are some fun things to do around each town - we'd be looking to make a week trip out of it. I even tossed around the idea of going full blown "city slicker" and maybe staying at a dude ranch/cattle drive type place.

With the way that the Canadian dollar is right now, Calgary would be nice and affordable. Although if you are planning on coming this way I suggest you book a room now, they sell out really fast. Calgary puts on one heck of a show.

I have only been to Calgary as a contestant, but from what I seen, it is a great experience...so many different events to take in during the Stampede, and be sure to take a day and check out the mountains, gorgeous country!
Calgary has an atmosphere like no other!

Calgary Stampede for sure. There is so much more there than just a rodeo.
Be sure to take a little side trip over to Banff and Lake Louise too. You will LOVE it!

Good to know! We've never been to Calgary before so any other "must see" spots would be great to hear about!

If you are coming from the states Calgary would be great for you with our low dollar vs yours. As Ridejg says Calgary puts on one heck of a show. The entire city gets into the Stampede. The stampede itself is huge with a lot of free entertainment, free pancake breakfast all over the city, big name music acts
(extra dollars and I'd suggest looking on line now for tickets for those
), there are quite a few horse events at the stampede as well like a cutting show, then of course the rodeo in the afternoon and chuckwagons at night.
Outside of the stampede Calgary as a lot of tourist things to do. First thing though is plan a trip out to Banff/Lake Louis. Absolutely beautiful - a definite must see.
Around Calgary there is Heritage Park, the Calgary tower, Olympic Plaza and they have a really nice zoo along the bow river. A must see should also be a trip to Spruce Meadows. Spruce Meadows is a world renowned show jumping facility that is actually privately owned. They host a lot of World Level shows throughout the year. Google them online and see if there is something going on there while your in town. Even if there isn't a show on you should go out and walk around and see the facility, as I said it is world class and beautiful.
Go on Trip advisor and enter Calgary and things to do, you will see a lot. But as someone else said, best to book hotel room asap the city fills up.
I hate big cities but if I ever had to live in one my top two choices would be Calgary or Denver. Calgary is a super nice city and stampede time is great.
