My gelding created quite the gall sore right behind his left elbow. I threw the cinch away and haven't saddle him for about 3 days now. I have been putting Vetricyn on 2 to 3 times a day and have not seen much improvement. Any recommendations on how to speed up the healing process and any advice on a new cinch that will prevent soreness in the future. I was using a Ventech by professional choice. I have spoken with my vet already since he is a little tender when I touch it.

I use that yellow stuff lol Furazone? I think its called. it will get rid of it in usually 2 days. I have delt with colts with really sensitive skin and thats what I use. It will make the raw skin harden, peel off and youll have a new layer made and healed.

Are you sure it isn't girth itch, or ring worm?

My vet ruled out ring worm. He says girth itch/gall sore  run hand in hand a lot. I figured Vetricyn would have helped it by now though.

Corona makes a topical fungicide called Fung-A-Way. You can treat the horse and also use it on girths and saddles pads.

Basically our whole barn has had it. Horses can get it wether you are riding them or not. They just get it! Don't ride them though. It makes it worse and it is super painful. Here's what you mix up to put on it to clear it up.. Tub of Silverdine, 25cc genimicin, 10cc dex, two tubes athletes foot creame a shot of scarelet oil. Good luck!

My feed store carries a pink fungicide spray.  It's the only thing that has ever worked for me for that kind of fungus.  Plus it's very inexpensive.

The trade name in Canada is Viroxx, works wonders. Also a sulphur based cream works well.

Zinc oxide has also worked on a horse who had it really bad

Anything will take it away if you can change the PH of the skin.

I've never found anything that actually works. All my horses have them even one who hasn't been ridden in months. Vet told me not to worry about them just keep girths clean and buy new ones when they wear out.

I keep a qt spray bottle of home mixture of 1 oz of strong iodine (6-7%) mixed
with plain old cooking corn oil for all scritches, scratches and dings including
galling.
Iodine promotes healing, dries it up while the corn oil keeps flies away
and you can spot doctor ... doesn't take but a wet spot and then spread
with your finger ..

Best cinches in the world and last forever ... use the roper cinch
http://www.dmtack.com/products/11cr-dm-roper-cincha/

The square end of the cinch buckle really works to spread out the pressure ..
photos showing how a cinch should lay on sides of horse and not at elbow ..

You need... a tape measure , 5 ft of sturdy string, knife or scissors

Easy way to measure for cinch length ...
saddle horse with old cinch and cinch them up to compress blanket ...
carefully remove old cinch without disturbing saddle ..
tie one end of string on offside saddle D ring
run string under horse and tighten it thru near side D ring..
cut string off at near side D ring ... then cut string off of off side D ring
now measure 16 inches of string and cut it off ..
the remainder is the length of cinch you need ..
if odd number like 33 add an inch and order a 34 inch cinch

You want the cinch buckles to lay on horses sides above his elbows ..

Spend another $10 and get you a new cinch hobble for the back cinch
to connect to front cinch ...

Use Woolite and rinse good to keep cinch clean and soft ..

GOOD LUCK ...
high quality proven tack is the least expensive thing you can buy

Numotizine is a poultice I've used for sprained/bruised legs, but not sure if it would heal a sore or fungus.

We use this....disinfect cinches before using on another horse.
