We had it too in my husband's heel horse.  Early detection and a good vet helped make it easier to deal with but it is nasty.

Yup, looks like pigeon fever.  We had a case several years ago in the dead of winter.  It was a horse that had not been off the place in many years.  None of our other eight horses contacted it.  There were no horses in the pastures adjoining on either side.  I was extremely careful to isolate the horse in question and observed all possible hygenic procedures when cleaning/doctoring the horse and never coming into contact with other horses until decomantating after contact with the infected horse.

They said cold hose it. And do hot compresses on the drainage part. Give bute if he gets to feeling bad. So far he is eating. Drinking. And normal temp. But it's really swollen up and feels hard when i press on it

We've had a few horses with that exact thing these last two years (I think 3 horses?) and we suspected Pigeon fever but we just cold hosed it every once and a while and kept an eye on it and they all went away on their own. I think sometimes less is more...especially when something like this is popped and its so contagious!

A mare I used to own came down with pigeon fever while pregnant.  I had her on grass and noticed a lump on her chest.  I had no idea what it was but one day it exploded and it was draining so I washed it out and I can't remember how long but basically left it alone after that and it went away, didn't affect the baby and she was fine after that.    I did run her at the bonus race finals earlier that year though so maybe she got it there..not sure.

Oh yeah that sure looks like it. That's a good spot though, it'll be easy to drain. If it is getting hard it is getting ready to pop. Hose with cold water. Some people have them lanced. I've been told no antibiotics. I've heard it's from flies that carry and get into s cut or scrape. We had one get it and no others.

Our vet said that it can live in the ground for a lot of years. So even if they don't travel they can get it. We were really careful to disinfect everything. The drainage is the worse part.

Yes. Vet said looks like classic pigeon fever case. I am monitoring temp. Gave bute once when it was a little high. I'm cold hosing once a day and hot compress on the draining area. He is eating and drinking normally still. Swelling is pretty much the same maybe slightly more than when I posted this. Flies are super bad here!

Thanks!

Anyone know if vetericyn is ok to spray on the draining area? He keeps rolling and getting dirt and manure there. I don't want to mess with it too much

trying to post pics and update for anyone following. The 2 spots under his belly that were initally draining have stopped and healed over.  The smaller lump has hair falling off it now and its getting softer. I am still doing cold hosing and hot compress once a day. he is still eating and drinking and walking around pretty well. although still not feeling that great yet. wow this is a long process!!

Be sure to use some type of salve on the area that is draining. The drainage itself can cause scalding of the skin and be quite painful. I used Corona ointment successfully

Often times there will be a secondary abcess behind the initial area of drainage, so keep watch because it is not alway over when it appears to be over.
