Horse looks sore off the trailer, but gets better warming up

Has anyone had a horse who is pretty sore unloading from the trailer, but the more he moves around, the less sore he looks? Or does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this? He hasn't had any past lameness issues and is only 9yrs old. He has been turned out and treated with water therapy, poltice, hand-walked, etc for two weeks. He is looking 100% sound now, but am scared he might be sore if I haul him again. I am confused by this.

It used to kill my horse in my avatar when he backed out of the trailer. He got where he did not want to load because it hurt him so much to get out. He had a very mild case of EPM that three vets missed. It could be a couple of other things. SI or whorl bone.

Thanks for the responses. I was not coming up with anything that would get better the more he moved around. That is just so strange to me.

How long is he standing in the trailer?

Maybe he needs a bigger trailer? Does your trailer have a ramp or is a step up? How long do you usually haul for? Maybe try giving him extra electroltytes before and after you haul. Sorry for all the questions, just trying to get a better picture.

It is an aluminum stock trailer where he is tied alone in the front portion and my other gelding in the back. Lots of room. Our trips range anywhere from 1.5hrs to 4hrs, but never more without getting out and walking/resting. Hay in front at all times and water offered Everytime we stop. This is not new to him. He has been a rodeo horse for several years now.

Could be so many things. Even arthritis isn't unrealistic possibility. If you haven't had him vetted I'd start there.
