Little background story. Hubby and have have just about sold both of our QH's and I've been keeping an eye out for a teenage horse that might be good for adults and kids without breaking the bank. We have a family in our church who we are friends with and they have had a difficult year financially and just a lot of drama that couldn't have been helped (lots of hospital visits). They bought a handful of horses a few years ago, hoping that they were beginner friendly since this family has never had horses before, and they have sold the ones that have either physically hurt them or bucked them off. They are now left with one horse, which I have always liked. Nice mare, but they personally don't love her because she's on the lazy side and a tad buddy sour. Now, with all the drama that's been happening with them and financial stuff, I've been thinking a lot about their horse and the family. Would it be rude of me to offer to buy the horse from them? They don't really ride it, maybe once a month if they aren't busy with other stuff and aren't into the "rodeo scene" as much as they used to be, more into race cars now. I really don't want to come off as rude, and I'd like to help them with their financial stuff, but this is the only way I could see them accepting money/help and we would offer the horse a good home.
Thoughts??

Not rude at all. Happens all the time at barrel races/rodeos. Someone sees a horse they like, walks up to the person and makes an offer. You don't have to make it out of pity. It can be just because you're genuinely interested in the horse., I've always been flattered by that.

I would say go for it.  What have you got to lose?  You could also be helping them and giving the horse a good home.  Sounds like a win-win to me.

I think you can offer to buy the horse without mentioning any of their financial difficulties. (i.e. not hurting their pride or embarrassing them). Just approach them and say you've always liked the horse, you're currently in the market and were wondering if they wanted to sell her? You can stress it'll have a good home, etc...

True, I was kinda worried about how I would bring it up and this might be my ticket.
