| These bugs are horrible!!! It's wet and warm where I live so the flies and gnats are really bad. What's a good fly spray (preferably the homemade kind but if you have a favorite store bought that's fine too) that actually helps? I'm open to any suggestions... |

Location: North Dakota | I have the best luck with my own mixture.
Water, apple cider vinegar, witch hazel, essential oils: lemon grass, citronella, cedar wood, eucalyptus and peppermint. I make up two separate bottles of the same mixture and add Skin so soft to one. The one with skin so soft only gets used on legs and belly as skin so soft will heat up in the sun. I have also added the original blue dawn dish soap and/or vegetable glycerin to my mix before. I try to mix it up every time by changing the amounts of each essential oil and adding things to it to keep the flies from getting used to it.
I also have good luck with Outsmart flyspray from smartpak, no bite by pyranha, and endure flyspray. But I feel I get the same effect with my own mixture so use that for the most part. |

I second this fly spray! It cost $18.95 down here. I saw Tractor Supply had it online for $15 and change. Definitely worth the money! |

It's not cheap stuff for sure. But it works! |

| I agree with the Pyranha Wipe/spray. I buy it in the gal. size and got some at Tractor Supply for $49, our Orschlein Store is $59. It isn't the cheapest but sure works the best. I even like it better then the Endure. It is advertised that just an ounce or two is enough per horse. You just mist and don't soak them like I had to with the Endure. |

It also has sunscreen and coat conditioners. (I live in the delta -- with giant bugs everywhere.... mosquitoes, large black horseflies, etc.) I've tried them all. In 2nd place is Absorbine Black label. |

| Thanks guys! I'm going to try a few suggestions and see how it goes. The only reason I didn't really want to use the store bought stuff is because of all the chemicals they throw in them, but if they work it's better than having my horses eaten alive by bugs! Has anyone had a bad allergic reaction from the Pyranha?

| I mix Dawn, apple cider vinegar, a little bit of Pine Sol and water. Can't tell you the exact amounts, I just mess with it. For store bought, I use Piranha but the cider mix worked almost as well. |

| My FAVORITE fly spray so far has been Farnam's Wipe II with Citronella. It's the only thing that works as well as keeps the BIG horseflys away. It's an oil base so I dont recommend spraying it until you have your saddle and leg wraps on to prevent irritation. |

I have heard some horses have- hives and lost hair- and my farrier can't use it any more, he had sinus infections and shortness of breath when he quit using it the symptoms went away, |

| I really think it depends on where you live and what kind of flys. We live in the south. The worst flys in america reside here. We have what we call hummingbird horse flys, knats, deer flys, mosqitos and everything else terrible. I use Equicare Flysect with citronella from Horse.com by the gallon. This stuff will literally drop a fly to the ground if they come in contact with it and it works longer than anything I have ever tried. It works way better than Payrana. They actually have very similar ingredients so I bought Payrana one time when the other was out of stock. Bad idea. |

Location: Colorado | I make my own and it works great. We use it on ourselves, goats, dogs and horses.
1 cup skin so soft 1 cup original listerine 2 cups apple cider vinegar
Shake before each use
Not only does it keep the bugs away but it makes their coats so soft and shiny. |
