| Long story short I have a 11 yr old OTTB trail horse that is an ex-barrel horse due to an injury that is ok now, but my vet and I agree that he doesn't need to be running barrels, light trail riding is fine. The horse is priced at $3,000, he is safe and sane in every way. Perfect beginner horse, you ask and he does. So, I had someone contact me to trade a barrel horse for him. I agreed to look at their horse and then make a decision, knowing that I wasn't going to get my next 1D mount or anything but maybe something I could work with and take to jackpots and end up placing in 3-4D somewhere. Their horse was NOT a barrel horse in any way, shape, or form. The 10 year old grade mare wouldn't pick up or switch leads, threw her head around, walked all over me, and was basically lost when I tried to trot and lope her through the pattern. They left her at my house for 5 days so I could try her out and see what I thought. After the 2nd day of riding this goofy non-barrel horse (actually non-trained horse), I kindly told them I was not interested in trading, and they needed to come get their horse whether they were going to buy mine or not. They LOVED my horse (he stayed at my house and I told them that they could come ride/ try him a couple of times to see what they thought, they came out 3 times and each time I was there and the horse did fantastic). They asked what my bottom dollar was. I replied with $2,500. They asked if I would take $2,300. I said that I was pretty set on $2,500 because I already came down a pretty good bit and I don't HAVE to sell him. Part of me doesn't want to do it because it's $200 bucks people, cough it up but the other part of me thinks that I should take the money and run so I can get something else. Thoughts? What would you do? Take it or no?
I don't sell horses often and I'm just frustrated with this whole deal. I feel like it's been such a pain in the rear and a waste of time. Thanks for listening y'all, rant over :)

They seem like a very nice family that trail rides on the weekends. They are beginners, like beginner beginners, they have a couple of horses, but I'm not sure what all they do or don't know. I know we all had to start somewhere. It's almost perfect, maybe I'm just being stubborn. That's why I'm asking, lol.

Location: N Texas | If you don't HAVE to sell him, I think it's fine to stay firm with what you're comfortable with. If you think they're a perfect match and you can't see your horse with anyone else, then coming down a little more isn't so bad.
Just go with your gut. Is it worth you to keep him longer to try and get $200 more out of him?
I'm willing to bet that if you stay firm at $2500 that they'll suddenly be fine with paying that. | |

| I agree with the other responses. If it is a good home and the horse you tried was cared for and you like them, then I would sell him. Otherwise, if you are on the fence, keep him and look for another home. There is a good chance they will fork up the $2500 but if it were me and IF its a perfect home and feels right, I would take it.

Location: That part of Texas | I'd mention that I had already dropped the horse from $3,000 to $2,500 and see if they had anything that they might be able to trade for to make up the $200 difference between their cash price. You never know what they might offer up (saddles, bits, guns, hay, donkeys, etc.) to bridge the gap. | |

| Thanks for the responses! They really seem like great people and he's only going to be 2 miles away. I'm going to meet them in the middle at $2400 :) Everyone loves a compromise. Thanks again!!
