| So my gelding is super broke, flexes, BIG stop, turn arounds, yada yada. The other day I decided to ride him in my stop n turn hack. He's familiar with it, I like to ride in it about every 6 months to a year just for some light tune up and it helps keep him honest. Normally we just do some dry work and just lighten him up a little but I decided to breeze him through a pattern with it.
Holy crap!
He ran sooo hard and turned sooo hard without me pushing him at all. I seriously thought I was going to go over his shoulder for a second at first before I got my butt sat back down in the saddle. I sat down to turn and he started digging for dirt and turning. Now, I know how to use this hack, it's one of my favorites, I'm not hardly touching his face with it. But I really don't want to run him all the time in such a strong hack.
He's been running in just a little dog bone short shank snaffle, and I do mean little, it's not got much more shank than an argentine snaffle but its much nicer balanced. He works just fine it it, no tie down, quiet but he's never felt so freed up in between the barrels AND turned like he did in that hack. I really think that practice run would have put us in the 1 or 2d, without me pushing him at all. (and if I'd been prepared for him to drop out from under me like that at first lol)
Sooo, any suggestions on something that would offer a similar feel to that hack that's not sooo strong? Or would you run him in the stop n turn since he seems to work soooo well in it??? Like I said, I'm not touching his face in it other than a slight lift to finish his turns.
This is the hack I'm talking about in case anyone's wondering. Mine is a lot nicer than this one but same thing basically.

Location: In the Hills of Texas | I use to run a real light mare that was over bendy in a stop n turn. You have light hands you won't have a problem. When something is working you don't try to fix it..

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | Why are you even asking about something different to run in, sounds like hes working awesome in the bits you have him in now, so why change anything? Like NTO said dont try fixing something thats working.

Location: Bandera, TX | It sounds like the stop and turn suits both of you, I would try it out in competition and see how it goes. I ran my four year old mare in a bareback halter race a few years ago, it worked so nice I started running her at the pro show's in it. Our local ammy association's have a bridle rule so I ran her in a colt breaking side pull. But that rope halter worked wonderfully so I used it.

| Thank you! I think I'll make an exhibition run in the stop n turn and see how it goes. I'll take his normal bit in case for some reason he doesn't exhibition well in the stop n turn. I do think I'll try a couple other hacks at home, maybe a JW hack, and see if he just really likes hackamores in general for barrels or if it's specifically the stop n turn that he likes so much. | |
