| Barn Bag , you only give 1/2 cup and its full of protein, vitamin, minerals and amino acids and its not that expensive. I order if from valleyvet.com, free shipping. Im using it as a prenatal vitamin on a VERY EASY keeper mare so she can get what she needs with just hay/alfalfa. Not that expensive either, also low nsc! I would also use on my performance horses who are also easy keepers! |

Boo hoo. | want2chase3 - 2019-05-30 1:24 PM Delta Cowgirl - 2019-05-30 1:09 PM About eight months ago I switched my 16 year old mare to Nutrena Empower Balancer. She gets one pound a day. She has access to pasture at least 8 hours a day and free-choice hay inside. Prior to switching I had to keep her shod on all four because her hooves were totally crap -- very brittle and shelly. She is now barefoot all around -- and my vet told me she looks better than she has ever looked (owned her 13 years). Her coat shine is incredible. Two months ago I switched my seven year old gelding to the Nutrena Balancer and he looks better, too. He is a big boy with a bit higher metabolism and I'm feeding him 1-1/2 pounds a day, but I believe that will go down to a pound soon. He came back from the trainer a little under the weight I prefer -- as soon as he hits the ideal weight I'll back him down to a pound a day. It's been a win-win for me and my horses -- my feed bill was nearly cut in half and my horses look better than ever. I've always been a believer in forage first and this balancer has allowed me to do that and maintain beautiful healthy horses. And their mane and tails are growing like wild. How much is the empower? Is it a 50lb bag? I've found some of these concentrated feeds are only coming in 40lb sacks. I haven't used nutrena in ages... I fed safe choice in the past and then everyone started telling me nutrena was bad and not a safe feed company as far as medicated cattle feed getting into the horse feeds. Has nutrena cleaned up their act or is it still considered not safe ? 40 lb. bag; ~ $26. I have fed Nutrena Safe Choice for years. It is a good feed IMO. Several companies have endured issues with the cow feed contamination; however, they have all put new protocols in place according to reports I've read.

I stopped in my local Cargill plant that makes Nutrena feeds. I too was given the “safeguard” speech. You went you asking questions about those “safeguard practices”... not one single person can answer about what those practices are. The local Cargill plant uses ionophores. “But it’s perfectly safe because it’s only used in bulk feed and not bagged feed”. I’m not buying any of the crap that they are selling as far as their marketing goes. |

I would never ever feed any type of feed that comes from any Cargill plant, we have one here in Seguin up the road from us, never..A colt that I traded a friend from, she got the colt and all she fed was SafeChoice will guess what he died from the feed being contamination, it was a hug mess for her and this beautiful animal suffer untill she had him put down, its been about 13 years since all this happen and I think Cargill did pay her for the colt and Vet work, so after all this there is no way in he** I would feed anything from there, just a big huge risk, theres better feed out there to be feeding. |

Oh nope nope and nope.. no way. That's why I quit progressive ... found out cargill made it now.. I dumped the rest. Paranoid? Maybe but I'd rather be paranoid and safe than be sorry and suffering. After I became educated on all this ionophore stuff I always thought feeding any feed that also produces medicated feeds on the same lines as horse feeds was like playing Russian roulette with your horses lives. Regardless of their safety protocols in place. Just not worth it. If I decide to go with a bagged supplement from a feed company, itll be Triple Crown or Bluebonnet or manna pro. So far TC is at the top of my list for what I'm wanting to accomplish. It's kinda $$ but if I'm only feeding 1 to 2 lbs I think I can swing it for 2 horses. |

Don’t be fooled by the creative wording from feed companies about contamination protocols. They are good at giving you crap that sounds reassuring and skirting the real answer. “ protocols” “ testing of batches “ “ quality control” etc are all beating around the bush. Only safe feed is a mill that at NO TIME cattle feeds are produced in the entire facility and facilities of any ingredients from facilities that do. |

Location: Montana | Yes, I think a ration balancer is your best bet! I love Progressive Nutrition's pelleted feeds. I've fed it for years now. No one believes my TB stud is 20 - he gets a couple pounds a day and grass hay. That's all. It's expensive, but the difference it makes in horses is amazing! Woody's and Buckeye make good ones too. I'm not sure you can stay under one pound, but close enough. As a side note, I haven't lived where Buckeye is available for ages. So thought I ought to google to see if they still exist. Chewy.com sells their products. Did NOT see that coming! |

The feed rep at Buckeye told me 3lbs max if needed. But I'll be surprised if they need more than that with the alfalfa cubes and hay plus pasture in the evenings. If they get to the point where they need more feed I'll up the cubes or hay first. She suggested I can also add in their ultimate finish for extra calories, chewy also carrys that. |

Renew Gold.
Yes, I always keep a bag or 2 of RG in my feedroom. I actually think it will compliment the Gro n Win nicely for a little added fat. I'm happy with the Gro n Win so far they are getting roughly 2lbs a day right now and I've started throwing in a few handfuls of RG along with it. |

A complete, all around vit/min, preferred pelleted, supplement that is fed under 1lb per day? I'm trying to find a way to do this. I decided I just want to feed hay (what is available to me, isnt that great, it's ok but not super) and I'm going to feed the cube it alfalfa cubes. I'm looking for something simple to give that'll make sure they are getting what's needed. I'm not opposed to powdered but I think pelleted would be better to throw in with the cubes. Is a ration balancer the answer? My horses didnt like the TC 30 that much.
If your horses just needs vitamins I love Equerry's Choice! If you need some more than just vitamins, then I love renew gold. I order equerry's from a dealer near me and get renew gold from tractor supply. If you can't get that you could order some smartpak vitamins to add to whatever grain/feed you prefer. I am not a fan of processed/commercial feed thats why I like renew gold (non-gmo). I feed my older horse Eqerry's combined rx 4 way so he gets hoof and joint combo all in one. But not sure what you have to pick from everywhere its different. I can't get blue bonnet here but I think they have soy meal in it and I try not to feed soy because my dog is allergic and eats what the horses drop! |
