| I have a 10 yr old dash for perks x firewater flit barrel horse... She is a very big mare.. Very thick and tall.. It is like she has no flexibility in her legs.. I stretch her everyday. I just had a chiropractor look at her and she was just very tight even her neck and poll.. I was just wondering if there was any kind of supplement I could feed her or something I could do to get her to stretch more! I will try to post a picture of her! |

| My 5 year old was kind of like that. His hind end was always tight and he really didn't like to be shod behind especially. I suspected PSSM so I just started the PSSM diet. It's the only way to treat the condition anyway so it wouldn't hurt to try. Almost immediate results. I don't need to pay money for the test. Diet is the only way to treat it. |

| Horseluva97 - 2016-07-29 11:53 PM Yes! What is the advised diet? The type one test is only $40 and you get the results in a couple of days but for type 1 it is high fat, low sugar, added magnesium, natural Vit E, and sometimes selenium depending on your area. Type 2 is high protein and they are unsure if all the extra stuff helps P2 horses :)

Location: Northern Ontario | Thats interesting! What are the symptoms? My mare is already on a low starch, high fat diet(just because I find.it keeps horses quieter)..... she was also on vit e this winter to help with tissue repair (injury). I am a massage therapist and I oftern find she is quite tight in the hip area.... maybe I should get her tested. She is a big, stocky mare... |

Second this as well as trying a pssm diet because it can't hurt.
I started taking magnesium for myself. Before when I'd bring my foot up behind me to put my rubber bands on it was an instant hamstring cramp. Not anymore! Overall I feel better |

Location: Phoenix | I've found mares just have tighter muscles than geldings in general. Ive heard great things about magnesium but have no direct experience.
I've been pretty religious with stretching my gelding at least 4 days a week because he spends 75% of the week stalled. I stretch his legs when we ride, and after we ride (sometimes before, sometimes before and after) I stretch his neck. I have him touch the point of his shoulder, hip, last rib, down low by his rear fetlock and between the belly. Sometimes we practice his bowing but I want to get him away from that and try to keep his legs straight as he reaches under the belly instead. He's 17 this year and I love how it makes him feel and how relaxed his muscles are. |

High fat low starch. Grain concentrates should be below 13 percent NSC. I use triple crown senior at 11 percent NSC. Magnesium supplement and pure vitamin E. I feed mostly grass hay with little alfalfa. |
