| So after many years of effort I finally got one of my horses to start clocking in the 1D! I'm so stinking excited! I don't have the budget to just go by one already there so I've been buying young ones with the hope they had the talent and I finally got one!!! Problem is... I really don't know what kind of extra attention I need to be giving her to keep her clocking like she is! Please keep in mind I don't have unlimited funds! First thing I did was purchase all new iconoclast boots and tall hinds. What else do you all do to help them preform but not break they bank? Thanks in advance! |

| Congrats!!!!! IMO I wouldn't change much, just keep your mare comfortable and keep doing what you're doing if it works. |

| When I was in high school Martha Josey wrote a book about barrel racing. In it she said she cold water hosed her horses legs after every work out and every run when she could. I believe it was 10 minutes a leg. I bought the attachment for the hose to increase the water pressure. She used to also wrap her horses legs before getting in the trailer, so I learned to do that and always used mineral ice and wraps before loading up. The closest rodeos were always at least an hour and a half away. Then a lady I bought my WPRA money earner horse from, told me to wrap my horse's legs after every competition run and leave the wraps on for no more than 12 hours and I did that. My horse would have run in the 1D well into his 20's if we had 1D classification back then. He never had any lamenesses or ever refused the gate. If I ever get serious about barrel racing again, I will be doing those things for sure. They are cheap and easy to do. |

| Thank you all for the replies! After 8 horses and 15 years I can't believe it is finally happening!! I am currently In the process of building a new fence so she's gonna get her own little 1.5 acre pasture with a run in so I can protect those legs from the other horses kicking her!
GLP - what type of mineral ice did you use?
nevertooold- this is a good point! What kind of of fitness regimen do you all recommend for a horse of this caliber? |

Location: Durango CO | CONGRATS!!! I have had my first 1D mare for a year now and am still getting used to her. Just remember it takes time to get used to them and do NOT be discouraged if you fall into a lower division sometimes. Remeber to ride her like her previous winning rider did. Also, I like to breeze my horse routinely and exercise her like a sprinter. I do some longer distance stuff also but my primary goal is to get the heart rate up, bring it down for a short period and then get the heart rate back up again, etc.
One last thing, when I warm up for a race I make sure to do some really quick movements of some sort, whether soe short sprints, fast roll backs, etc. Anything to wake up the central nervous system. If your horse if hot and cannot handle that then dont do it, but otherwise if will benefit you to do so. |

| Don't change much, just keep going with the flow. I do minimal arena work and when I do, its exerciser like trotting and loping straight lines as well as stopping (slowly) straight. I never stop my horse in a turn. LOTS of counter arching. I agree with the other person that said get them a little quick footed before your run, if they can handle it. When your horse knows you love him, they work harder. One more thing, feet, I do not let them grow over 6 weeks. CONGRATS and have fun! |

Lots of long trotting. Keep her on a heavy workout routine because the more in shape they get the faster they get.
I would also look into investing in PHT products, check out Lydia Kennedy on facebook she is a dealer and has a ton of great information and also offers payment plans if you'd like, but the products do truly workout and you can get every penny back when you go to re sell it |

Mineral Ice is the product name, Sore No More is really good, too. I agree with NTO - make sure you keep her in good shape. That is probably the number one thing to keep them sound, that and a good feed program and tack that fits well. You are in for an amazing experience, don't forget to enjoy it! 1D horses are a whole different kind of high. I miss it. |

| I just wanted to add one more thing I did- as soon as I hot him unloaded at the rodeo, I would either walk him around or lunge him for about 5 minutes to get his circulation in his legs going. Just a walk or jog, before I entered up or did anything else. |
