My 5 year old gelding received a Fluvac Innovator vaccine this past Monday. Today, 5 days later, he is sick. I got home from work late last night and went to check on everyone around 11 pm and he seemed fine then but I did notice he had some swelling in his hind legs which I thought was odd because he had been outside in his lot all day and had not been in his stall long enough to stock up. This morning I went to feed and found a very sick horse. His left eye is draining green goo, he had dried mucous on the outside of both nostrils, he looked sucked up and I swear he lost 50 pounds overnight (not kidding as he was on the thin side to begin with), very lethargic and...all four of his legs looked like balloons they were so swollen. Vet came out out, vitals are all good, no fever, he is pooping/peeing, eating but not very enthusiastic about it, drinking ok. Vet gave Banamine because he was obviously very uncomfortable on his legs. Vet drew labs (blood count and chemistry) and a urine sample. We won't get results from those until Monday. Has anyone ever experience this or have any ideas?? Please note that my other 3 horses received the same vaccine and are totally fine.

Purpura Haemorrhagica, may be a possibility, but hopefully not. I lost a very special mare to it.  It seems to connected to strangles, even though my mare did  not appear to have strangles.  Good luck.

Im sorry to hear about your mare. I just looked this up. My vet didn't mention this condition but I did notice that he checked the inside of his upper lip and his gums, so maybe checking for the petechiations?? I pray its not, it looks awful

Thank you, he is still eating and drinking good. He seemed more like himself the last time I checked on him so fingers crossed!

I was just talking to someone  yesterday who’s mare had this, it is a reaction to strangles as opposed to having strangles.   It can be very serious, I would seek a second opinion from another vet.

I had this happen to one of our horses years ago. Same thing got vaccine and and a few days later he was sick with this. He made it through it but it was a long, long haul but was never the same again. Sending good thoughts your way.

Update on my boy: Vet called this morning with lab results. Several of his labs came back abnormal...I don't recall the specific numbers, vet said they were mildly abnormal, but his bilirubin was elevated in his blood and urine, protein was low in blood and elevated in urine, creatinine was normal but BUN low, his wbc and rbc were slightly low but his biggest concern was that he is pretty anemic, his hematocrit is 25 and should be at least 35. The swelling in his legs is still there although improved but last night his lymph nodes under his jaw were so enlarged he looked like a chipmunk. His appetite isn't great but he is eating some. My vet is consulting with an internal medicine vet at one of our larger equine hospitals and he is suppose to get back to me hopefully today. Prayers and positive thoughts are appreciated.

Had this happen to a mare I sold. They had her in with a strangles filly, my mare got sick, didn't tell the vet they'd had her in with a sick horse, so they put her down. Makes me sick because she probably could have been saved had they been honest.

Dr. Schell with curost products has spent his life pretty much studying Leaky gut. I would get in contact with him.
