I recently sent my barrel horse to a trainer to refine him and haul him a little for me because I am busy with work. She has put him into a more rigorous training program than I had him in (complete with spurs which I had never used on him) but she is already getting results and he is working really nice. She is not being hard on him or mean - just holding him accountable for his little bit of naughtiness and getting him more broke. Which is what he needs. He is so sweet most of the time I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

So why do I feel like I've abandoned my dog at the shelter? I've sent quite a few horses to spend time with a trainer and I have never felt like this.
What the heck?

I feel the same way.  I just got 2 back home, one was there 3 months.  He was soooo happy to be home.  She would like him to come back for a few more weeks but I just can't make myself send him back.

We sent Lynn for 30 days "tuning" and I felt like we abandoned him. Broke my heart!!

And that is why you sent him to a trainer. Because horses need discipline and structure, just like kids. If you don't put your foot down or have someone else put their foot down, they never learn respect and will walk all over you. I had a horse come back from the trainers super depressed. He had always been happy, in your pocket, thought he was a big dog. When he went to the trainer he was put to work and treated like a horse. He hated her and she wasn't fond of him. Told me he wouldn't make a great breakaway horse, because he didn't have it in him. I brought him home and he sulked for a couple weeks. I got on him and we found a middle ground and he took me through Jr, high school, and college rodeos, making it to the national finals once in HS and all four years of college in goats and breakaway. Sometimes they need to be shown how good they have it with you. And my horse never forgot it! :) He worked like a champ and is now retired as one :)

Sounds like she is doing right by him and giving him a work ethic. A horse should be held accountable 100% of the time. Spurs are never mean unless used wrong. Which is often by people who don't seem to know where their feet are.  I would be excited to get them back and ride them after
