Hi everyone, I cannot find a saddle to fit my gelding for the life of me. I have tried 16 saddles now, all different brands and gullet sizes. The problem is his huge shoulders and the lack of muscles behind his shoulder blade from a previous ill fitting saddle. Even if the saddle seems to fit, as soon as my pressure and the cinch pressure is on it digs right behind his blade. Should I try shims? I have heard both good & bad things about shimming but I just don't know what to do. I am trying a saddle now that fits better then most, but still sinks behind the shoulders tad and he is only 6 so I know he will just fill out more. Anyone have any recommended saddle brands for these types of horses? As well as pads? I have heard some good things about CSI pads. Thanks

Caldwell ultra rocket or rocket depending how big the horse and shoulders really are. I have really good luck with equipedic pads.

See if you can try a Tod Slone.  After buying and trying around 4 different saddles I ended up with the one I'd always had.  Turns out it fit better than anything else.

My gelding has pockets behind his shoulders bc he's appendix. He's got big shoulders as well. Here's some combos I've used Double J with # 10 tree and a biofit pad. Great for him but I didn't like the way the rigging on stirrups got my feet behind me. Sold it. This is what I currently ride him in and the CJ I have for a long time. Charmayne James Cactus with 7" gullet and Biofit pad works exceptionally well for both of us. Martin Crown C 7" gullet with 3/4" 5star pad, no shims. It also is working very well for both of us. Best of luck to you!

The problem with him is he has a pretty slim/average back other then his shoulders. The best one i've found for him so far is a connie combs circle Y at the beginning at my search, but didn't take it cause I thought I could find better. Huge regrets!! lol. I think I need one with a flare. Has anyone tried a meleta brown saddle with the flare at the shoulders? Apparently they fit prominent scapula horses? I'm thinking of trying one but would have to ship it to me so would like others opinions first! Thanks everyone

Try the Meleta, you won't regret it!  My pony horse is built like yours and the Meleta (original tree) is the only thing that fits him and doesn't slide back, drop down in front and dig in to his shoulders.

I have the new Maleeta Brown saddle for my horse that is built similar to yours. I use a BOT liner and saddleright pad and it seems to work well.

Yes you won't regret it. It is all that I find that will fit our horses. My husband has to shim his ranch saddle. I need to beg Meleta to make a ranch saddle with her famous tree.
