| So I got to thinking... Pendleton is a unique rodeo. The pattern is enourmous, there is a lot of money and prizes, ect. Some people do run their good horses but do many run a backup or alternate? Also I wonder what extra prep it takes to get a horse ready for the barrels at Pendleton. Any thoughts? |

Location: 31 lengths farms | I've run at the 4th of July race there. Getting mine FIT was the number 1 priority as I had run that pattern on foot one time but that's another story, just know I ran 4-5 miles a day and I puked at the end of running that on foot. For two months leading up we long trotted down the creek roughly 2 miles, and ran 1/4 mile, walked a mile, then breezed 1/2 mile. Walked to cool out another mile. We did that routine 2x a week, 2x a week in our neighbors pasture that my fiance worked up a 1/2 mile track on for us we long trotted 2x each direction, the breeze a lap, rate down do a couple collected 10 foot circles and breeze again 2X each direction, walk till they got their air back and lope 2X each direction, do some collected trotting and then walk to cool out. 1 time a week I hauled over to an arena that was the biggest I could find, it is 250x200 and I set the barrels at the absolute max I could in there. Long trotted two times around the outside of the arena each way, went in, breezed once around the perimeter and right into a pattern, breezed the other direction as I finished and then right into one of the reining patterns from there to kind of keep that yes, we were running a lot but they still needed to respond to cues. The pattern we got set in there was 40 to the first then 170 between first and second and had the 3rd 15 foot of the back fence. My 2 I took have some race breeding a little ways back, both have big motors, we adjusted the routine a bit each week depending on how they were doing or felt. The other thing I did was to have them shod with their regular shoes about 5 days before we left so they had new nail for grip, you are turning on dirt and in July we didn't have to deal with wet grass. Never had any issues with the transition from grass to dirt or vice versa but that maybe because I don't do a lot of arena riding anyway and they are out traveling from dirt to grass on our rides normally. The first year my gelding ran a 30.6 with me basically winning the world in western pleasure to the first barrel, LOL!! Second year he ran a 30.06, my little mare had just come off a year off with a stifle injury the first year I ran her, I baby sat her thru a 32.4 and the next year a little while before being diagnosed with a bladder stone and kidney stones she ran a 31.6. They cooled out nicely never came up sore either year. |

| I set up the pendleton pattern in a big pasture and drug around the barrels and made a large track. I remember doing a lot of long trotting and sprinting, and doing a couple run throughs a couple times a week. I also went to the race in July, so my horse was already in pretty good shape, she never ran out of air and finished with a 30.3 with a wide first. Fun!!Fun!!! |

| I just listened to Fallon Taylor on Western Sports Weekly. She said she wasn't running Baby Flo at Pendleton. She said Baby Flo was at home resting. I can't remember if she said what horse she was riding.
I know some ride other horses and many ride their main mount. I think it just depends on their individual horses and which they think will do the best in that setup.
Also..... K.C. Jones posted a long video of Pendleton barrel racing 1st performance the other day on his Pro Fantasy Rodeo Facebook page.https://www.facebook.com/Profantasyrodeo1/ It is a public page and should be able to be viewed by anyone with or without a Facebook account. He also has it on the Pro Fantasy Rodeo website. https://www.profantasyrodeo.com/

Location: Idaho | The pattern this year is larger than usual. There was a sprinkler box that broke right where the horses run to the first barrel. They moved the first and second barrel and the timers, I want to say 30 feet down the track, but don't quote me on that length. I've ran there several times on multiple horses both at the round up and the 4th of July race. I never do anything different, but my regular routine consists of riding out, trotting, loping, and breezing for several miles everyday. I also do lots of rolling hills. I've ran horses barefoot, new shoes, old shoes... I've never used ice nails. I mostly just do the same thing as I would at a regular race or rodeo.

#1 on my bucket list.
Mine too!
Being an East Coast girl I'm dreaming of the day I have my crew ready, take a break from work, and hit up some of those large out door pens for poops and giggles! |

I heard them talking about that on the video, figured it had to then become bigger because it isn't like they can really move the 3rd up or you are on grass for it.

Location: North Dakota | Fallon Taylor ran "Spot" her Appaloosa horse there last night. He is only 4! That takes guts to take a 4 year old there!
It is also on my bucket list! We've talked about just setting up a pattern in someone's pasture and having a barrel race if we can find some level safe ground. I think it would be a blast! |

| The thought terrifies me as well. Wide open on grass freaks me out a little. I just think the worst. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | It wasn't near as scary as my mind tried to make it, even on my runawa/aka free runner, LOL!!! In fact, the single most fun thing I've ever done on horseback. Hence the reason we made the 12 hour haul to run it again the next year and I do not haul long distances, LOL!!!

Location: Cocoa, Florida | I was surprised to see Fallon run Spot but I thought it was very cool and unique (as we all know Fallon has to be unique and different) to see an Appaloosa run at Pendleton, and not only run, but run a pretty darn decent time! She ran a low 33 I believe. Fallon can hustle a horse that's for sure.
I think kimmie and stevi had the fastest times so far?
Edit: Mary walker pulled Latte up after he tripped for the second time at the first barrel, he also tripped starting out Too.
If it were me myself, I'd have to condition my own body, I would run around the pattern a few times myself so I knew I could breath trying to run my horse for that long lol!
