Location: Somewhere around here | I posted one of my saddles for sale at the beginning of August and I have an old college friend that immediately wanted to buy it, but she said she would have to wait a couple of weeks to come get it with cash in hand because she'd just started a new job. I didn't mind waiting since my schedule at the time was fairly busy but now that it's been part a month, I still have my saddle. We've contacted a few times and she's still very interested but she never had the time to come down and actually buy the saddle. She only lives two hours away and I'm getting a little annoyed now about how long I'm having to wait, but I am unsure what to do. Today I asked her again on when she might be able to come down and buy the saddle and she has yet to answer me. I do not like going back on my word or advertise a saddle who someone is interested in, but I feel as if this is getting to be a little ridiculous. |

^^^^ THIS ...... I learned the hard way with our truck.....now, I will never hold an item for anyone....the first person at my door with the money gets it....by now, you could have missed out on a couple of sales......send her a message that it is being advertised now! |

Location: sunny california | well I guess i am the odd man out. If I had a very good freind that really wanted to buy my saddle and it was a really good deal for her, and she probably could not afford to get something that nice, I would wait unless I had an emergency and really needed the money. good freinds are hard to come by. only you know how good of a freind she is and her financial situation as well as yours. |

I think I would do the same. I'd feel bad just selling it without telling her if she was a friend, but also agree shes had long enough to act on it. If it was someone I didn't know I sure wouldn't have held onto it so long. |

I have never put a personal ad up to sell a saddle just because I don't want the liability if a tree is cracked or has a hair line fracture. I practically live at Teskey's so I sell my saddles to them for in store credit. They check all the saddles for soundness issues and fix them accordingly if they need it.
BUT I will never ever hold an item for a friend. I sell a lot of items that are not saddles online. I require at least 20% down and give them 90 days to pay if it is over $300. Since I sell a lot of cowboy leggings, chinks, and chaps it's a pretty good deal for day workers who can't spend $300-$400 for leggings all at once.
If I don't get my money in 90 days, I keep the 20% and relist. I have never had someone not pay me in 90 days. When I contact them about it being close and about them losing their 20%, they find the money pretty quickly in order to keep their end of the deal. I do give them ample time to respond tho. You'd be surprised how many people have to drive to town for cell service to pay an invoice on PayPal. Especially during calving seasons. So I do account for that.
I send invoices at the first of every month or every two weeks, depending on when they request to make payments. It's a good system for me. |

Location: N Texas | I've been on both ends of this deal. I think you know you're being jerked around. Give her a deadline. Say you need the money by x date and then after that, you'll be advertising it. I've found that if someone REALLY wants something, they'll make it happen. I sell art and painted skulls and things of that nature, so when I post something for sale, I'm used to people saying "Oh I want that!!" and then they never actually follow through. I give them a deadline so when I don't receive payment, they can't be mad at me for selling it to the next person.
The last saddle I bought was from a friend. She posted it on Facebook and I knew I wanted it, but I had to try it out first. I told her it was going to be a week or two before I could come out, so don't hold it for me because I understand if you need to sell it. She was nice enough to hold it, I tried it and bought it. It's my favorite saddle, so I'm really glad she didn't sell it, but I also didn't string her along for a month and a half.
I get that you're trying to be a good friend, but she's being a crappy friend by making you hold a saddle that she most likely has no intention of actually buying. Sure she wants it, but not bad enough to come get it. |

I'd like to advertise the saddle now though in case someone else is interested in it and would buy it sooner. I really don't know how to go about telling her that without her wanting to whine or fight it out.
Background on the saddle; its new but slightly used with a matching breast collar. Has about ten rides on it and two times its been oiled, I just don't like how I sit in it compaired to my old saddle that I'm keeping. |

(maybe give her a week for the date). ...... End of story......if she whines, tell her that you will happily sell it to her now but that you will not hold it any longer.
eta: Additionally, the farther into fall and winter you go, it will be harder to sell a saddle. You "owe" an acquaintance nothing more than being honest with her.
