Ok I have tried everything from sauerkraut to MTG to my newest and most successful No-Thrush. I have been battling it for about 3 years and no luck in clearing it up. Was thinking about it and was wondering if there were any underlying problems that could cause issues such as chronic scratches?

There is this stuff "hey where's that blue stuff" I have seen it all over Facebook and haven't paid much attention to it but a friend bought it for her horses scratches that mtg would not cure and about a month later it was gone! Worth a shot.

You might try Biozide. I had good results with that and also Synbiont.

My horse had what I throught was chronic scratches that wouldn't go away. I got it biopsied and it turned out to be yeast. I would suggest doing this and find out what you are really dealing with.

I agree with the other poster about having it scraped to see if you are dealing with scratches or something else. I have one horse that now gets horrible cases of them and I've tried a bunch of stuff which all works to varying degrees.

Someone posted about using diaper rash cream so I tried it. I slathered his legs, wrapped with saran wrap and put standing wraps on him. I kept him wrapped with cream for three days (I did unwrap and reapply daily) and his scratches immediately cleared up, the scabs were soft enough to rise away and by the 4th day hair was started to grow back. That's by far the fastest response I've had to clearing up his case of them (and it was a cheap fix!!)

Save yourself a ton of money, go to TSC and buy a can of Alushield.  I spent $600.00 at the vet trying to clean up scratches on my young filly.  She had them throughout the spring, summer & winter and NOTHING I did healed them.  Believe me, we tried everything.  All I could get from the vets is "yes, its a difficult case".

Then I called a friend of mine (well known barrel racer) in Texas and she said "go buy a can of Alushield".  I spent $13.99 at TSC and it cleared it up in 3 days.  Its probably not scratches and instead a photosensitivity to the sun.  Worked like a charm and my horse hasnt experienced it since.

I live in a very wet area (SW Fla) and every summer and almost into winter, I have to keep an eye legs.

One of the best things I ever started doing was hosing legs off every day when I bring them in.  It cut way down on skin issues for me.

We have a horse that had a really bad case, was spreading like wildfire and the leg was swelling.  Finally we did tucoprim and vetricin.  Cleared it up and we have made it a little past a year without another breakout.

I orderd the Hay What's that blue stuff..... and it works!! I used it on a sarcoid, which I had no idea that it would work and it is almost gone. Then my mare had a sunburn (I think) and rubber it on her nose, then another gelding I had no clue what the stuff was on him and his hair is actually growing back. And they love it, must feel soothing?? Worth a try and it is pretty cheap :)

I had to get antibiotics from my vet and wash my horse twice a week with anti fungal shampoo to finally get rid of it.

It works-if you haven't tried it-I would suggest it....won't hurt.  Get the highest content of zinc oxide possible (30%) smear it on-works at keeping the moist away from fungus/yeast-also keeps the sun away like Runnincat said.
