Also he's only 7. Β She is the roper and barrel racer so all her horses I have seen for sale do both. Β It makes them more marketable in my opinion. Β

I rope off all my barrel horses and all my husbands rope horses get worked on the barrels. And not for reasons like BHUSA assumes..rolling eyes..

I don't think the pictures are good enough to give a solid opinion on. They are at odd angles. One view he looks straight, another, he looks ok.

The only thing I see is the shoulders look a tad steep, I like a shoulder thats a little more sloped. I like the horse, would not scare me off at all from buying.

And another thing I think its againt the rules to post pictures of someone elses horse that you are thinking of buying. You have to own the horse to beable to post pictures of.

The rule is; You may only ask for a critique of a horse you own, not a horse you are considering buying..

I DON'T EITHER ..... I GOT SUCKERED INTO THIS THINKING THE POSTER KNEW WHAT THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT .... ALWAYS ASK FOR PICTURES ....... What crosses my mind is what is wrong with this horse that he could not stand up to the rigors of being someone's fantastic barrel horse instead of having some fat guy sitting on him with a rope ?? ... He was turned into a roper for some reason ... most ropers would not even look at a horse with these bloodlines!!
Really? I don't like that horses front end! The pasterns are upright and a line from the point on the shoulder down the leg will show you how unaligned the leg is. His shoulder is steep and is going to give a rough ride. Based on this I see knee and navicular problems in the future. I'd pass on the horse, but this is only my opinion and take it for that :)
Totally agree with you.  Some of my least favorite traits are apparent in this horses front end.  From the point of the withers to the point of the shoulder to the point of the elbow should ideally be a perfect triangle.  (Jack Van Berg... Hall of Fame racehorse trainer)

I may be the oddball out, but I don't like how he's trimmed. It makes him look more upright than I think he should be. I don't know, I'm not a farrier, but it doesn't look like his boney columns align. Look at his back feet...why is the toe so squared off? It doesn't look like it matches the angle of his bone structure. I'm not saying to leave "skis" out there, but something doesn't look quite right. If you really liked him I would have xrays done and make sure you don't have something going on in there.

She said the shoer has to put on smaller size shoes because he pulls them when she is roping....I still can't undertand why he does this?Β

The smaller shoe is a big red flag for me. I would check for contracted heels, if the horse has contracted heels, I would suggest getting X-rays and a lameness exam as contracted heels can cause navicular.

I agree that the pictures are hard to judge. My gelding has very upright pasterns and although I wouldn't trade him for the world, I have a phobia about it. Based on these pictures, I would be scared away which says a lot BUT I think you need more pictures before you decide. My gelding does wear corrective shoes and although no bony changes in his feet, he does jar his joints if not kept up with. He gets reset every 4-5 weeks, no longer. I wouldn't say he is bumpy, he is bred for hunt seat so he has a lot of lift in his strides but he isn't bumpy. I will see if I have a picture so you can compare.

The back feet are squared off because of him pulling the shoes on the front when he runs

We would for sure get xrays and vet check...just wanted to see if it's even worth it to go that far.

the worst thing you can do is put a shoe on that is too small. This guarantees foot and leg issues. If he pulls the shoes off at all there is a shoeing problem.

This ^^^^ if my farrier were putting smaller shoes on my horse to keep from pulling shoes off then this lady needs to find a better farrier. There should be no reason to be putting a smaller shoe on a horse..

I am riding a couple client horses who are built straight up in their pasterns... and while I don't find them really rough to ride... they have small feet, lots of heel and will have problems with their coffin bones later in life. They don't reach well and will not hold up. I would completely pass on a horse built this way!

Yes, and also, squaring off the toe of the hind end speeds it up, from what I've been told through the years for my long-legged, short-backed horse.

You want to speed up the breakover in the front, to help with over-reaching.

Back to the upright pasterns, my same horse has those too, although, I didn't see your pics to compare.  Yes he is rougher than others, but still sound and running great - he'll be 21 in January.
