Elite Veteran Posts: 725	So I recently bought a 3 year old from a feedlot operation. I got him home and noticed a few hard scabby specks like from a bad bug bite and tons of flakey white dandruff. The more you brush the more dandruff comes off. A week later and those little hard scabs are everywhere all over his back, sides, neck, hips, down to his knees and jocks but not on his legs. It's still really flakey and when you part the hair and look at his skin it's all flakey white. He's a Bay. I'm gonna give him a good full bath tomorrow, what would you reccomend using as shampoo and does anyone have a clue what this is? TIA

Member Posts: 6	I would guess it is some type of fungus. Wash him with BioWash a few times and it should clear up super quickly. You can find it on Teskeys. It has tons of science behind it and will get his skin back to normal quick! http://www.teskeys.com/biowash.html it is AMAZING stuff!

TIA Your crusty spots are fly larvae that cannot live on horses blood from the cow flies ... dead larvae are creating a weeping bump at skin level .. It's possible the white dandruff is from cow lice if you have not found raw spots or nits in mane and tail for horse lice ... and also possible is dry skin due to stress or running a mild fever .. Worm with a full tube of ivermectin ... it will kill any remaining fly larvae or grown lice that MIGHT be hiding .. Mix one ounce of strong iodine in a qt spray bottle of corn oil to doctor the crusty spots ... rub into spot with your finger ... this is a good general barn item for other scruffs or scrapes .. Bathe horse with cheap human dandruff shampoo, rinse and then do some human hair conditioner over body, mane and tail ...(comb them out).. Rinse sweat stick and let horse dry .. Doctor crusty spots again .. AND every other day until they go away... as you noticed ... more will appear due to flies leaving eggs in their bite marks somewhere else on the body ... most times it is common cattle grub flies biting a horse and feeding to reach the top of his back ... lol .. give another week or two for it to stop occurring ... Use some Johnson & Johnson baby oil ... wet your hands down with oil and wipe them on a small hand towel ... now wipe horse down all over with the towel leaving a light sheen on his hair ... do this again in 3-4 days .. acts as a skin moisturizer without collecting dust ... This may sound like a lot but it is what one would do normally if they were going to show in a halter class or want horse to shine under arena lights ... WHAT'S GOOD FOR THE OUTSIDE OF A HORSE IS GOOD FOR AN OWNERS SELF ESTEEM ... lol .. Edited by BARRELHORSE USA 2016-10-16 10:51 PM

Expert Posts: 1343 Location: East Texas	Hey, Where's That Blue Stuff is AWESOME for fungus. My old gelding had some places all over him and one application and he looked 100% better! I am sold on it!!
