I have a 2008 4 Star horse trailer that is warmblood size. It is 7'6" wide and tall. The stalls are 48 inches wide and it has a rear tack. It was fine when I had my huge barrel horses, but now I'm riding tiny reined cow horses and they just seem to swim in this trailer. It also leaks in the dressing room. I can't find the leak, so I was going to take it to an rv shop to see if they could find the leak. I also have a tire that wears funny, so I'm thinking an axle or something might be bent. So, my question is, should I just see if I can fix the leak and tire issue and keep it, or should I just sell it and downsize to a regular size 2 horse trailer?

KEEP IT ....

Tall trailers are much cooler than shorter trailers .... the metal roof can heat up to 140+* and the further away from your horses the better.

Typical width is 36-40 inches wide ... the extra width allows horse to settle in and not be cramped. A horse uses his legs and feet to remain balanced and doesn't require a wall to lean on. I would tie them long enough for them to touch their nose to their shoulder bone which allows them to relax more, reach feed and water bucket and not be able to stick their heads under the divider.

Leak ... Start with your air conditioner.. take it out of the hole ... There are rubber gaskets or boots you can place under it to seal up the bottom contact with your trailer. You can use either of these together on each side of the above or as the sealer by itself ... I go for the overkill when I am working on something so I do a gasket with the butyl rubber on both sides ..

AC GASKET EXAMPLE
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Camco-25071-RV-Universal-Air-Conditioner-Ro...

BUTYL RUBBER CARTRIDGE
If you can see some seams inside your dressing room ... use a dry wall paddle to work this one into any cracks in the seams ... goes for nose of trailer also ..

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gray-777-Butyl-Rubber-Sealant/251871240876?...

BUTYL RUBBER TAPE .. windows, doors ..
http://www.ebay.com/itm/GSSI-MB-10A-Butyl-Tape-3-8-x-3-32-x-45-Rubb...

FORGET ABOUT USING CAULKING OR ANYTHING WITH SILICONE in it on metal ... it will look very nice but has very bad attachment to metal ...

WHEEL WEAR ...
It may be a simple bent or warped metal wheel ... move your spare to this tire and rub your hand across the face of the spare to feel if it is smooth all the way across the tread. After a 2-300 miles rub hand across and see if it is still smooth or if you feel edges/ridges across the tread ... this is called feathering if a tire is wearing incorrectly.
If it is smooth ... buy you a new metal wheel for your spare ... if it is feathering find you a horse or RV trailer builder in your area to do a laser alignment on your axels which will check if they are bent ... or if a spring is off... or if one of your brakes is malfunctioning ..

As a general maintenance item ... how long has it been since you repacked your trailers wheel bearings?? And had your magnetic brakes checked for wear and working order??
I always replace the entire magnetic setup on all 4 wheels at the same time rather than replace a few parts ... this way I know I am good to go for another 10 years ... lol ... Example of one wheel brake set ... order your size etc etc ..
http://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Brakes/etrailer/AKEBRK-35R-SA.html

Most times you hear of trailer wheels catching on fire and burning the trailer down ... one or both of these above are the culprits ....

You might save some money by doing this and having visual inspections done on axels and getting your spare tire moved to the ground .. just make sure they keep your tires on the same side of trailer they are currently on ... and air them up to maximum limits per side of tire ... and have them balanced!!!

If you have a bunch of money burning a hole in your pocket ... then dump your present trailer and buy one that you will regret ... lol

GOOD LUCK ...

^^ This^^.
Love our extra tall trailer. It is a lot cooler in the summer. And I'd rather have them swimming than being stuck in there.... Gives them more room to balance.

Why sell it? If you have a A/C tighten it back down, my trailer started to leak and I could not find the leak for a long time then one day I noticed my A/C would rattle a little when I turned it on I noticed the bolts were real loose so I tighten and no more leak. Yep you need someone to check that axle for you. But if its payed for I would be keeping it, I like roomy trailers, they have better air flow.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I don't have an ac, just the dressing room. The leak is coming in around the door, but I can't for the life of me find it. I had all of my stuff grow mold last winter because if it. Very frustrating. A couple of friends of mine just gave me the name of an rv repair place that they really like. I'm going to see if they can look at it for me. It is paid for, I'm just frustrated right now. Plus, I am having a barn built with a center aisle that will be wide enough for me to park it under all the time from now on. I believe I'll keep it and just get those couple of things fixed.

If you're still on the fence about fixing it or buying a different one, do a cost comparison. What would it cost to get your current trailer fixed? If you were to sell yours and buy something else, what could you get for yours and what would the price of another trailer be? Does the costs of fixing your current one outweigh those of selling yours and buying a different one that could have problems as well?

Wish you had said you had a leaky door when you posted ...

Now is also a good time to tell us you ran over a big curb while
turning the trailer and knocked everything out of alignment ... lol

Your door is probably warped from slamming it or wind blowing it open.
... or needs new weatherstripping ...

New heavier weatherstripping will fix either one ...
or add a drip line above the door ..

Adding some kind of weather proof vent in your tackroom would
be a good add-on ..

Getting information out of you ladies is like your not telling anyone
about kissing my ugly brother with a big lip full of skoal .. lol

Well., I for one am gonna stand up for him (BHUSA). OP quoted her response NOT her original post that BHUSA responded to where she says she has a leak but doesn't know where it is coming from. He was trying to HELP with info he was given,

Now for the tire wearing funny I am going to lean towards loose or ungreased bearings/axle. I DID have to replace both the subframe and axles on my 4Star, but it is 23 years old and I can't begin to estimate the miles on it (am guessing close to a million) and lots of them were hauling to winter rodeos here in the frozen North where salt and brine corrode the crap out of anything metal.

My door is warped but it was that way when I bough it new. They told me how they would fix it which consisted of wood blocks and slamming the door. I did it myself but never got it completely fixed....should have made them do it but it wasn't worth hauling it back to OKC to get it done, so I just live with it. Have yet to have my tack mold from it thou

Why is every thing termed to be hateful these days ... nothing hateful was said ... that is an old texas saying like when you miss a sign for your turn off to go to granma's house ... or you didn't read the book and try to write a book report ...

On the other's that did show their hatefulness ... Since you are from Arkansas ... I will use an arkansawyer saying for them to pay more attention to what they read and say in the future .. ...

"Every now and then even a blind hog will find an acorn... "

Getting information out of you ladies is like your not telling anyone
about kissing my ugly brother with a big lip full of skoal .. lol

But the third sentence does say leak around door!!!!

Does your family know you are blind in one eye and can't see out of the other one???

We'll agree to be friends since reading on a computer can make "cute" sayings maybe be taken the wrong way! I think both my eyes are ok---it's my leg that has issues
