Extreme Veteran Posts: 509	Just getting a good balanced shoe job will do wonders if the foot isn't balanced it never seems to get much growth, I was having problems thin soles not much growth, I took mine and had rood and riddles farriers shoe him,they did rockers leather pads,equipack,new instructions for my farrier and he can't believe how much foot growth i have now, i did switch to renewgold that's the only chance I've made on his feed.

Red Bull Agressive Posts: 5981 Location: North Dakota	Mine had thin soles. He got an abscess that required having a good chunk of his hoof cut out. Because of that, he was on padded front shoes for several months, then regular front shoes. Total time was about a year. I couldn't believe how much better his sole is now! He's back to being barefoot and doesn't have the same tenderness he had before and his hooves look significantly better. Hoping he stays this way, but if not I'm a believer in pads and shoes.

Elite Veteran Posts: 999 Location: Sunny So Cal	THE Hoof Salve really helped my horse. It helps with the pain as well as for the hoof to grow. I think for feet, to really help, you need to target them from the outside as well as the inside. I paired it with THE Hoof Growth which is the feed through supplements and the Salve is what you paint on their feet/sole/heel/whatever the problem area is.

I tried and tried to keep my Streakin' La Jolla gelding barefoot. Vet told me it was NEVER going to happen, he had thin soles and would not ever get a think sole just due to the type of hooves he had. (I had been using Rickens on him). I gave up and shod - but I did have to use Vettec (sp?) pour in pads for a while because I sored him up so bad trying to keep him barefoot.

Last spring he would have intermittent lameness, but would be sound on soft arena dirt and would still run a beautiful pattern. I finally took him to the vet. Xrays showed a thin sole. That mixed with the extremely wet winter/spring caused him to have pain on hard ground. They also recommended shoes, but I prefer barefoot. They gave me some hoof pain which was a mix of formaldahyde and iodine to dry out the hoof and harden it up. Now I have to walk a fine line between keeping his feet dried out and moisturizing to keep him from chipping. I also invested in EasyCare boots in case he needs extra support again, and put him on Vita-Biotin every day. No further issues. My point is you don't have to put shoes on him. There are other options.
