I have a barrel horse in his mid teens, as is quite common he has sore hocks that need injected twice a year. My farrier told me he wants to put full slider shoes on his hind end during rodeo season to help with his hocks. Has anyone tried this and is it safe?

Call me crazy, but I don't see how full sliders and barrel racing is going to end well... just my opinion...

Years ago we had a gelding that we ran with sliders on because he turned his third barrel so hard, the shoer felt he needed them. He naturally wanted to slide around the barrel with his rear end up under him. Kept him from hitting the barrel on the back side. We couldn't turn him out with the other horses. He did fine with them. This was back in the 80's.

This is the slider I use on one of mine with sore hocks. She ropes, runs barrels and poles. These are very narrow, not wide webbed like many sliding plates are, but have the long tails.

We do have to take them off when we go to the mountain to get cattle. Check out the description of these, labeled for sore hocks. TK Slider MPS

Edited to say: I have not had any issues yet (and hopefully never) with these being pulled off by other horses or hanging up in the box.

I have plates on the back of my LSOF.  Like someone else said, these are fairly narrow- so more traction than an actual slide plate shoe.  He seems to be more comfortable in these compared to the wide rim I usually use.  The drawback is that they are slick as heck on grassy hills...

I have two farriers--one that's shoed for me a long time and the other trims my colts because the first one is banged up enough that he doesn't want to mess with babies any more. The shoer was putting rims on my gelding, and I could not figure out why he lost his snap, and why he was so sore in his pelvis and loin. He was out of town and I needed my gelding reset before a long weekend race, so I got my colt trimmer (who is also a great farrier) to set my gelding. He took the rims off and put a narrow slider type shoe on him and he's been really working awesome since...really got his snap back. Don't know if it's the new shoes or if he's just feeling better, but I'm not going back to the other shoes! He very seldom has any ground issues, and it was no different with the shoe change--at a race where the ground got a little iffy.

He wants to put on the full sliders that are thick all the way around, he told me the push off leaving a barrel is where the hocks are stressed and somehow sliders will keep his back feet from getting jammed up. He has no issues getting jammed up and moves good. I'm somewhat scared to try them since 90% of rodeo warmups are in grass or rock parking lots but he swears it will be fine.

Those are the ones we had on the horse. We never had to inject him and the chiro said no adjustments were needed. This horse ran WPRA and was run almost every weekend at multiple rodeos and hauled all over Texas and the western states for years.

Plain old plates.

Mine haven't had any trouble standing up, and I don't seem to inject as often since going to plates.

If he can go barefoot on the back( most can) that would be ur best option bc it lets the foot mainly the heel expand and contract which eases up the concussion on the hocks

Just my two cents but I think that is going to make stifles sore.. you need some grip pushing off the barrels...(Just like if you'd take off from a stand still, do you want to be taking off with tennis shoes that will hold you or slick boots that will make it easier for your feet to slide?)

There are pros & cons to both rim shoes, slide plates & regular normal keg shoe plates. Slide plates have can be very useful in teaching a horse to get their rear end up under them in the turns. But they are slick and have 'turn out' issues. Rim shoes or shoes with grip give the horse the ability to get a hold, but can also cause horses to bow tendons & do damage because their bodies are turning, but their legs & feet are not. Regular plate shoes, keg or made, give you a little bit of the 'slide' without the long heels.
