 I live in Central Texas, and we would like to put an arena on our property. What type of footing do people use? Is it easier to hire someone to do it or can it be done with a tractor? Do you remove any of the top soil first?

Your top soil is the reason you are replacing it with a better footing type of sand/clay mix ..

If you have texas black gumbo mud OR white cleachy soil
... you are in big trouble ... lol

You can level an area using your top soil and even form a depression 6 inches deeper than the edges of your intended arena to prevent new soil from washing away .... or even a small donut of dirt around the perimeter for the same reason .. then build your fence on top of the donut if you are going to fence
it in ..

When looking for new arena dirt ... go check out the infield dirt used in
baseball diamonds ... it is usually a little orange colored due to being
a sand clay mixture and will stay in place during hard rains or dry spells.

Most people think dragging an arena should be deep to be soft ...
all you want is a surface cushion and then sound footing ...
3 inches deep is a good fluffy top

Here is the best little soil grader, road or arena leveler I have ever seen
this is to be used AFTER you have your arena completed ...
and they are cheap and durable!!

Some have hard welded blades/teeth and others can be adjusted for depth
you need on your arena drag ... normal 3 pt hookup works well ...
You only want a 3 inch deep drag and be able to keep your arena smooth and level ... this thing or similar 2 bladed drag will work wonders for you ..

There are videos of different mfgs on youtube .... and you can see how they work with no moving parts doing the drag ..
