Hello. I have skimmed through the USEF drug policy for the WPRA and I did not have my question answered. What is the run down on using Ventipulmin? I know its prohibited/ controlled, but with the release form for all other drugs and medications, can I get a prescription from my vet and be able to use it or is it still a no go? thanks!

I may be totally wrong so its best to confirm with the WPRA office but I believe ventipulmin (clenbuterol) is a class 3 drug, which cannot be used, and can carry a fine upto $250.

I believe you can get a script from the vet and use it.......

If it is not banned by the WPRA, it certainly should be.  It's one of the bad boys.

Because it's a steroid and is performance enhancing.

On the race track, the pull off is 72 hours I believe.

I agree, it is a life saver for horses with airway disease. However, when given in higher doses or for long periods of time it has anabolic-like effects (like steroids). Also, tachycardia is a side effect so it makes some horses' hearts beat very fast.

Every vet I've talked to says the same thing. They all think it should be allowed. It has helped my horse so much! But I do know someone who was fined $500 first offense by WPRA

Raises heartrate, puts the animal in distress and more.  Yes, they run faster, it's a performance-enhancing steroid.  It doesn't enhance the horses' lives, it enhances the riders' lives.

Part of what you said might be true but the other part is not. I've used it on non performance horses with heaves. If you couldn't see the muscles on their flanks you would never be able to tell they had severe heaves when they were on ventipulmin. I use albuterol on my barrel horse who has RAO. She isn't severe but she coughs a lot during warm ups and loses air while running.
