| Those of you who have chosen to surgically fuse or fuse through injections which procedure did you choose and why? What vet did you use? |

| I have done an alchohol injection to help fuse the lower joints. With the one that I did it on, it was not your typical situation as we were dealing with the aftermath of a septic hock. But from what I have learned during this experience, I would do it again if another horse needed it as a last option after alternative treatments didn't work. It's not something that I would choose to do early on, but if injections and meds such as Adequan or Legend are not helping then it is something I would look into doing. |

| Dr Hague in Edmond Oklahoma is the only one I would trust with this.
I had him laser mine. He got a secondary infection that entered through the scope hole in the lower joint about ten days after surgery and I surely I'd killed him. Got him over the infection, thankfully didn't go into the upper joint. The complications resulted in the joint not fusing, so we drilled the lower joint 6 months later. This caused enough fusion that the horse came sound about 7 months after that with full turnout. He does still experience some soreness if I run him too much, so I choose our runs now.
My full recommendation:
Use Dr Hague, and leave the horse at the clinic in his care for 10 days-2 weeks after surgery, just to make darn sure you're in the clear. I left mine with him 2 weeks after 2nd surgery and the incision from drilling had healed completely, with no swelling or heat in the joint.
I don't regret the surgery, and would repeat if I had one was fusion or bust, but I definitely would change up the aftercare. |

| I had laser surgery done on 3 of mine, I don't inject the hicks, I go straight to the surgery I find it more cost effective, and better for the horse.
My vet is the co author to Dr Hauge, they developed the laser surgical fusion procedure.
Mine also left at the vet clinic till the incisions healed fully, never had any complications |

I am in Canada so everything costs more.
Mine was 5k
Well worth it, as hock injections when I priced them out 250-400 per time. |

Location: BRITISH COLUMBIA CANADA | My #1 barrel horse has a surgically fused pastern. I bought him as he was just fully recovered and back to riding. He is 100% sound and I have no issues. He gets coffin joint injections once a year as a preventitve measure, and that's it.
