I am definitely not knowledgeable enough reguarding bits. What are some bits you prefer to start young horses in on the barrel pattern?

This horse has been started in a simple O ring snaffle and works very well in that.

I'm just looking for something that has more "lift" and turning so to speak. He has plenty of "woah".

The bit I use now for my running horses is an Austin Hodges Furturity bit, and both of them love it. Just scared that using that bit will be to much of a jump for him from what he has now.

Thank you!!

A simplicity, sweet 6, a draw gag, jr cow horse, 5 bit, any kind of short shank lifter with a 5" shank...

If a horse works well in an o-ring stay in that until you feel you are having to use too much pressure. You can teach lift and turn in a ring bit. I have mine loping a pattern before I've ever felt the need to go to something more and it's always been because I couldn't get a quick enough reaction.

I stay in an o- ring as long as possible, but I do like a Jr cowhorse with the dog bone in the middle.

I absolutely love the 3 pc Jr cowhorse. That is what I put my young one on. I sent her away for a month just to get started on the pattern and the trainer tried several bits and went back to the Jr cowhorse I had on. It's actually my go to bit for young horses that are ready to transition.

I run both of my mares in smooth snaffle wonder bits.

Stay in the o ring as long as you can, I know several who run in them.

IMO a correctly started horse who is taught to carry himself properly doesn't need lift.
