I just had a pad built for a barn/shelter. My first option is a carport barn like the picture with three welded wire stalls (2-12x20's & a 12x12) with runs out to a pasture and a hay/tack room. I could also park my trailer in the 18 ft breezeway. The second option is similar to the shelter which would be 18x 40 with two 18x20 welded wire stalls with runs out to the pasture. I would have to build a separate hay/tack room. I'm in central California, so it really doesnt get cold and we don't get much rain, but it does get pretty hot in the summer which is why I'm doing welded wire stalls. I'm not sure whether I should go with the bigger structure and smaller stalls or the smaller structure and bigger stalls. I would like everyone's input/opinions. Thanks

I would rather have a smaller structure with bigger stalls, especially if it's not getting really cold.

If your horses stay in their stalls a lot, I would go with bigger stalls.

Ditto on bigger stalls.  My horse is in a 16x16' stall and I couldn't imagine going any smaller width wise!

I wouldn't bother parking your trailer in the breezeway unless you plan on walking your horses around the barn to get where you're going.

Bigger stalls with runs if you plan on leaving your horses in stalls for a long period of time..No welded wire for stalls I would be useing pipe instead. Wire they can hang a foot to easy..

Do the red one .. it has more uses than the others ...

On the shedrow sides ... raise the legs to 10 ft which costs very little but
you do not have the hot roof cooking your horses ...

Also it has a wall to keep the hot evening sun out of their stalls ...
have this side on the west side ... (note on the others your horses
will be chasing a spot of shade all day long)

Parking your trailer in the alleyway sure makes a difference when loading
up during the day VS in a hot scalding trailer that has been sitting outside.
Or having the alleyway for farriers, grooming your horses or whatever.

On your welded wire ... make sure you get the 2x4 horse welded wire panels and
they will fit right into angle iron at top and bottoms with a vertical support
in the centers of the lengths for added strength ...
if you have a kicker ... just put some 4x8 sheets of plywood bolted to the wire ...

For stall gates ... use the 4 ft U shaped race horse wire gates ... and have them
open to the inside of the stalls ....

The good thing also on this unit ... you can add 5 ft sections to it to make it
longer right now or sometime in the future ....

This red one is more functional for your needs as a horse owner ..
