why do you dislike underwoods?? just curious i havent used it.
I guess the main reason is that I used it on a horse years ago and his bad cut healed up fantastic. He has a bad scare where he got a chemical burn from the Underwood's. Breast collar covers it up pretty well. Never had good results with THAT horse. Sometimes you just have to use what you can. Had a baby that nearly cut her foot off. One of those things that never heals. She would not let me hydro it and it was January. Started Underwood's and it heaed faster and with hardly any scar. It does work well for most horses and some really bad cuts.

i was kind of worried about not wrapping it after i read that. i intend on putting her back into my competition program so any kind of lymphedema would be make me worry. i was looking into a hydze compression stocking??? she has some swelling but nothing i have been worried about so far, but i have kept a good wrap on it too. any thoughts there ??
i do not have to worry about it freezing i live near Houston Texas:

Compared to people, I've noticed that horses tend to get a lot more edema in response to cuts and other soft tissue injuries. It's not uncommon to see a relatively mild cut in the upper leg result in a lot of edema beyond that point. People worry too much and fret too much about the edema. Other than maybe hose the leg down, I wouldn't fret too much about edema. When you go through the trouble of wrapping with elastic wraps, more often than not, you are treating yourself, not the horse. Edema is almost always temporary and actually serves as a good guide to the healing process. Inflammation is an important part of the normal healing process, and edema is usually a consequence of inflammation. True lymphedema that becomes a chronic problem as a result of soft tissue injury is not very common at all. Even in those cases, wrapping doesn't prevent it.
The best treatment for most edema that we're talking about is exercise, because with most edema the problem is increased hydrostatic back pressure in veins....so serum and water leak out into surrounding tissues. When you walk or exercise a horse that musculovenous "pump" promotes increased venous return, which lessens the edema. You see the same thing with horses stocking up after long trailer rides or stall confinement. It doesn't take long and the swelling disappears after they get some exercise.
One way to prevent swelling and "stasis" in people's legs during a long flight is to flex your calf muscles or walk around. You reduce the venous stasis and improve that "musculovenous pump" and actually reduce the chances of blood clots.
