| I've been reading up on Previcox and am getting conflicting information. It says to give it for no longer than 14 days but my vet recommended 1/4 tab for daily usage for arthritis on a horse I have. I am putting in an email to the vet as well to get clarification, but how are your vets having you use it? Is there long term side effects from a low daily dosage lasting over the 14 days? |

| Its FDA labeled for 14 days continuous at 57mg/daily. Vets may prescribe OFF LABEL use of longer periods. Thats where the confusion is. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I have a broodmare in foal, due in May. She has been on it since Oct and will continue to be on it most likely until the following Oct. She is the one with a needle tip broke off and under her coffin joint. We will start to fuse that joint as soon as she foals in May, but until then, Previcox is keeping her very comfortable. She is on 1/4 tab daily. |

| Ive given the 1/4 pill to an older horse daily every winter with no issues at all, it really helped manage his arthritic pain, some horses don't tolerate it as well so just keep an eye on him. My other horse will refuse to eat his grain with the previcox after about 10-15 days so he no longer gets it. |

Location: USA | I just started to give it to my old crippled guy about a month ago and it sure seems to help him. He gets 1/4 tablet. He is so lame and has a hard time walking, this is my last resort before I decided to let him go. |

I give 1/4 pill daily to two of mine on the really cold days (usually day before the cold gets here too), but my vet never said "only use X number of days". I've wondered about long term use because of ulcers, etc.
Sonny was on Previcox for several weeks before he was diagnosed with a stress fracture and his treatment was changed; one day Sean put the Previcox in MY gelding's food by accident----he called me and said he thought Faci was colicing because he was curling his lips and was eating really really slow. (Which is not like this horse at all.) Of course I asked about sweating or pawing or wanting to roll; none of that he said. I was getting ready to go to the barn when I called and asked him if he could have given Faci the medicine---and we decided that's what happened. So my hoggy horse was not happy with his breakfast that day!! But of the ones we've given Previcox to, he's the only one that didn't care for it.

 You get what you give

Location: Texas | I just had this discussion today.... so, many vets agree that horses can be maintained on previcox daily for long periods of time, indefinitely, as long as they don't show signs of ulcers or renal disease. If they start to show signs that would make you concerned they may have ulcers, then you should stop giving it. |

Location: Duvall, WA | My mare was put on previcox last fall and quickly developed hoof accesses. Eight over six months, was crippled for almost a year. She was boarded in a place with rocks and mud during that time so I assume that was the reason but I've always been curious if the previcox had anything to do with it. |

Location: North Dakota | I had my Red on Previcox daily (57 mg) for a few months, when his hock injections didn't completely help the pain with his fusing hocks.
Since then, I use it as needed when I have a long weekend coming up.
They can absolutely be on it longer than 14 days. Just depends what you are trying to manage. Personally, I would not give any more per day than the single dose (57 mg). |

| I've used previcox daily on several horses (all older teenagers). I usually take them off during the winter break but no one has had any issues. That is suppose to be the beauty of it. Long term use with no problems. It is actually the same compound (as I understand it) as Celebrex for people.
However, we are now going to be forced to buy the equi-ox tablets and not use the dog form any more. The drug companies are clamping down on the vets. It is slightly more expensive than Previcox but it's not terrible. My vet quoted me a 60 tablet bottle for $105.

| We give my husbands mare 1/4 tab daily in the winter as she has soreness in her hocks. We don't give it in spring & summer when weather warms up. She has done wonderful on it. She is 22 this year. |

| Long term, continuous use of any NSAID "can" cause issues. If doing so, it wouldn't be a bad idea to pull a CMP periodicially to make sure kidney and liver values are ok among other things.
And yes, since there's now an equine equivalent in pill form (Equiox) you're going to see more and more vets using that. Previcox for horses, even though it's the same drug, is considered off label use. Some equine insurance companies are cracking down on claims wherein horses were prescribed off-label drug usage. Not just previcox. |
