Location: Oklahoma | What does everyone look for confirmation whys on foals (still with mom couple days/weeks old) I've looked at some but find it much harder to pick out flaws (maybe it's because they are all so cute) will they grow into out of many things? Example: thick throat latch
feel free to post pics of what you believe is a good built foal!

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I don't think I would buy a foal that is under a week. The older the easier it is to tell what they will look like conformation wise. I think at 2-3 months they start getting that beefy butt as they exercise and chunk up. |

Location: British Columbia | You can't pick a horse apart at that age. They change SO much from the time they are born until they are 2(the most drastic changes anyway).
I have one the was horribly sickle hocked as a weanling but she was line bred Bugs Alive In 75 so I took my chances. Today she is straight as an arrow. I've had some that looked almost a little blocky in the face as colts that had find heads as 3 year olds.
You roll the dice no matter what with foals. Just use your judgement, view both the parents and trust your gut. |

Location: California | I think it's incredibly hard to judge how a foal will mature. Especially one that young.
I bought a 6-7 month old Andalusian colt a few years back. He was HUGE. All legs and exactly what I wanted. Tall dark & handsome. LOL well Andalusians are like Arabs-they mature slow. So I really thought I was going to get a tall horse. My now stud didnt even hit 16hh & he turns 5 late July. Still love him, but he definitely doesnt have the height we all expected. (just for an example) |

Location: ND | I don't think you can judge a baby at all for the first few weeks. Here's a few babies I've raised..... KC was THE UGLIEST baby when he was born, he didn't even have a cute head. Most current pics where last summer as a 5 year old & he's gorgeous. Angus was a tiny little thing, again most current pics are as a 5 yr old & he's huge. Almost 16 hands & super thick. Priya again was a tiny baby, current pics are as a 3 year old, she's still not tall but she's a tank.

Awww thanks you guys! Angus went through some super homely stages, fall of his 4 year old year he finally bloomed and has stayed gorgeous since. I actually gave KC to my dad, he has him coming along nicely as his next mounted shooting horse. I kept his full sister for myself though! |

| If I am buying a foal/weanling.
I look at the side and dam for conformational faults. If possible I will look at siblings etc. |

Location: Washington. (The DRY side.) | I like to see foals (or GOOD pictures of them ) when they are 3 weeks old. (Colts below are all by the same stallion, out of mares that are bred totally different from each other.)

Location: Washington. (The DRY side.) | Also, you can't really accurately judge the neck of a nursing foal. Their necks grow longer as they age, and they SHOULD get thinner after they stop nursing. (Most babies look like they have short "fat" necks. But that changes if they are built right.)
