| I just read the BHN February edition with Martha joseys article and had never heard of spraying Pam or cooking spray to prevent dirt from packing in hooves. any thoughts? Does it really work? |

I tried it multiple times about 25 years ago and I thought it was a waste of time. Now hosing horses legs down before running them in slop did seem to help some from mud sticking.

| I just feel like I've hauled quite a bit and never noticed anyone shaking up their cooking spray before they run |

Probably not since it was a thing to do at leastΒ 25 years ago. LOL
Forgot to add..that some people complained that it loosened up nails. Like I said...it didn't work for me so I never used it long enough to see any problems.

Location: Displaced Iowegian | If we ended up at a rodeo with sticky wet clay, I did spread Crisco over my horses hooves......It keeps the clay from sticking to the hoof and the hoof slides easily in and out of the clay while running.....This was MANY years ago. I don't think "Pam" would have a thick enough consistency to help. |

Interesting, you are actually putting it around the outside of the hoof correct? |

I agree about the Crisco but I found it to be a messy PIA. |

We put it on the bottom and yes, around the outside of the hoof....Yes, it was messy but it washed off a LOT easier than the sticky heavy clay that would stick to the hoof without it. There were only one or two arenas that it was "needed" if it was raining.
eta: I usually brought my hubby or one of the boys to do it for me.....LOL
