Thrilled for Hailey to have won. Pretty amazing for a qualifier to win, especially in the barrels because most of the horses that are capable are in the hands of the industries elite. I also was SUPER STOKED for Cody "hot sauce" DeMoss!! I have watched that guy come in second in the world by very small margins. He and Heith are local boys and I just couldn't be happier for him.
Cody DeMoss is one of my all time favorites; so happy he won! I just shake my head at everyone bashing him for what he said about the gold buckle.... if anyone has followed him it seems pretty clear that anytime he is put on the spot/on tv, that he gets a bit tongue tied. I think his comment just came out a little differently than he meant it. |

My husband and I had an argument about this. I understand exactly what he said about the Gold Buckle. He is a competitor and that gold buckle says you were the best for the year, not just one rodeo. I am sure he was very proud of winning the American, but it ain't the NFR.

I understand what he "meant." But I still think it is not a time or place to express that. It came off ungrateful to me. This rodeo has offered him a wonderful opportunity and he should thank them and recognize that. I also understand that people get nervous and say things at the wrong time/place but even at the press release, I was not impressed with him. Just my observation and feeling on it.
Did he sit out last year or something which is why he came in as a qualifier?
I will say, Hailey is the only true qualifier IMO which makes this extra special. |

Yes and I think this year they brought the top 10 and some invitees. I believe the announcers said he had to go through the qualifiers. |

I agree.....it was just plain RUDE to be standing there getting a check from a man for 100K and tell him you would trade it for a Gold Buckle......I would have jerked that check out of his hands and told him that I would mail him a buckle....and don't give me this he's shy......he has never been shy with sarcastic remarks his whole career.....here's a picture of him when they were lining up at the end....nice "attitude" .... |

I agree, too. Isn't the purpose of the American to allow the "little guys" a chance to compete against the big dogs. Hailey is what I would consider an underdog. I don't know her, but I am guessing she doesn't make a living rodeoing or hauling to 80+ rodeos a year. Cody DeMoss has proven talent - when I look at him as a "qualifier," I don't consider him an underdog. |

I bet the RFD folks wish your opinion counted for the pay out.
Again 1D - MY OPINION...
Sage Kimzey was #1 in 2016 w/$311,451.27 in earnings.
Cody DeMoss was #12 in 2016 w/$138,768.01 in earnings.
Both were at the NFR in 2016.
Hailey was #105 in WPRA w/$11,710.26 in earnings.
In my opinion, the qualifiers are folks who don't necessarily devote their whole lives to rodeo for whatever reason. Time, resources, finances, etc. The American is unique because it gives them an opportunity to run against the best and for big money. Kimzey and DeMoss compete against this field regularly. Just different level of excitement to me.
Doesn't mean I expect RFDTV to care what I think. |
