I have a 14 year old gelding that I am thinking of putting on adequan but I am open to other suggestions. I have him on equinyl combo, which is seems to be doing better than he was, but I notice he is a bit stiffer on cold days and he still has a joint that is clicking. He has mild arthritis in his hocks and at least his right stifle (only one I had x-rayed). He is just coming back into work from a series of lay offs, first he had lyme disease, then fell on the trail and injured his SI, then we thought was having another lyme flare up and turned out he has pssm type 2. I don't want him on anything that is going to be irritating to this stomach, just went through treating him for ulcers as well this winter.
I will only be lightly trail riding him, he loves to get out but would like him feeling at his best.

Everything you listed him being laid off for could likely be related.  I would recommend a clean diet full of top quality forage, no processed feeds whatsoever, and minimal whole grains used a medium in which to mix the Cur-Ost products.  Here are a couple of articles explaining how all of these issues are tied together.  Hope you get him feeling better!

Yes I am pretty sure everything is related. He had mild arthritis before the lyme, but I am sure having chronic lyme made it worse. He fell on the trail because he had muscle wasting from his pssm, which we were completely unaware off. Which was most likely triggered by him having lyme disease. Having muscle pain is stressful for a horse, why he had ulcers.
I would be very very hesitant to take him off his current diet which is geared at managing his pssm symptoms.

Pentosan/Glucosamine Every 5 days for 4 doses. Then once a month or twice a month if needed. Lubrysin in feed.

PSSM also likely related, just be sure you're not exceeding 2 pounds of grain per feeding if you're not comfortable changing.  Carrieh77 had great luck with the entire program on her PSSM mare, but I completely understand the hesitancy, believe me.  I was terrified to quit all the medications my horse was on as well, especially after 3 vets advised me to put him down due to the fact they felt he'd suffocate even on the medications when hot weather arrived.  Scary stuff for sure!  Hope you get him feeling better!

Because of Age I would lean towards polyglycan or Legend instead of adequan. Adequan is more for preserving the good joint space/Cartilage that already exists. I use adequan on young horses and just keep them on it. My 12 year old mare gets polyglycan and she does great on it.

PENTOSAN is also a great option for horses ALREADY with issues.

You need Forco to get the gut right. Magnesium(vitamin) that controls nutrients. VitaminC and pure vitamin E, these feed ligaments (tissue) large muscles. feed daily. Use daily for 3 months so all body parts become synced.

I've tried a lot through the years, I am all for preventitive.
Pentosan for injectable
JointFlex or JointPlus for top dress. I've used both of these in different horses and have always been really impressed

Thanks. I will look into all these things.

He does already get magnesium and natural vitamen e. There is some vit c in the equinyl combo but not a lot.

He also gets tri-amino, and gets Gastro plus at the moment, I have one scoop left then he is going on GI support.
