He's got 3 upper molars on either side that are cupped/concave so they aren't helping with grinding at all (he's 18). I've never fed hay cubes before. I was thinking of doing alfalfa cubes and then giving him Bermuda in addition to that since it's softer and probably a little better chewed. I like the idea of Omnis but I don't think there's a supplier in Arizona. Standlee seems to be a quality product but they're about $12 per 40 lb bag. I don't know if that's high or average or what. But that about $180 in cubes alone per month at 18-20 lbs per day!!! Yikes I'd better get a third job. =P. So help me out here!! Edited by hammer_time 2017-04-23 9:08 PM

He gets 6 lbs of cubes and 6 lbs of chaffhaye. He also gets 6 lbs of grain. He looks good on that and I've been riding him. I up and lower it due to activity level. If I fed just cubes he'd obviously get 12 lbs of cubes. Make sure when your soak you use warm/ hot water. The cubes soak and soften 10 times faster. When I use hotter water it only takes 10 minutes and they are swollen and soft. With cold water I have to soak for 30 minutes or more and they still aren't even totally soaked through and soft. I use standlee cubes.

Location: Big Blue Skies	Do you have a Hay-rite dealer out there? They have mini cubes with oats and are cubed in the field My horses look great on them.

Nut Case Expert Posts: 9305 Location: Tulsa, Ok	We use the Standlee alfalfa/oat cubes for our 35 year old. We do break them up to avoid any chance of choke as he doesn't always chew the best. Tried the Hayrite cubes and they were just way to hard. Breaking each cube required about 20 strikes with a hammer.

I just read the headlines Posts: 4483	I buy the Mustang Sally cubes that are made by the same people who make Omni cubes. Where I get my MS, they don't sell the Omni's and where I get my Omni's they don't sell the MS cubes. But I am not sure they sell the MS in Arizona. I feed them because the new horse was not wanting to eat the Standlee big cubes, but the MS cubes are smaller and softer. They are as small as Standlee cubes for Minis. My TS quit carrying the Mini cubes, but you might see if you can get your Standlee dealer to order the Mini cubes.

Expert Posts: 1207	I also feed 4 different alfalfa cubes, (1) Omnis cubes (only at night now that I have grass); (2) Standlee alfalfa/oat cubes in the morning and I soak them so their supplements have something to stick to; (3) alfalfa/burmuda in the mornings and I soak these also (4) alfalfa cubes I get from Stillwater milling and I soak these also. The Omnis cubes I do not soak. The others I do. Don't ask me why I have 4 different kinds of cubes as I guess I wanted to give them a variety.
