| Successful futurity colt, not entered a whole bunch. Now a 5 year old and owner/friend says her vet says needs injections 3X a year (based on x-rays) and that is not alarming. She has plans to rodeo and both say he has a future, no one is very concerned.
I was alarmed...3X a year for a 5 yr seems like a lot, but maybe I'm out of the loop.
It's not really an argument lol, I'm just curious what you experts say!

| 3 times a year seems odd to me. |

| 3 times a year for a 5 year old? How does vet know how long the injections will last ?? What shows on x-ray does not often correlate the same for every horse depends on use, other maintenance so many factors. I don't think you can indefinitely inject a horse for the rest of us life and this sure seems like a lot to start with.

| I agree! She is not the least bit concerned and feels like she will have a long term rodeo horse. |

Location: Bastrop, Texas | Seems to me a lot of people routinely inject horses, including younger ones, as a matter of maintenance, regardless of whether they have any signs that it's needed. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but that's what they do. |

| No vet can look at X-rays and say, "yep, you'll need to inject 3 times a year". Maybe coffins. But hocks or knees...no way. You don't know how often they need it until the horse basically tells you. Some might need twice a year, some once. Rarely do they need 3 times.
We have a gelding with some fractured vertebrae. We inject his neck. The first time, the vet said said we'd just need to pay attention but to plan on objecting yearly like clockwork to avoid wobblers.
Hocks have always been on an As Needed basis. Typically every 6 months on the mare. The gelding has been over a year now and doing fine.
I would be getting a second opinion if a vet told me 3 times.

This!!! For ME, injections are a LAST resort. (I'm just scared to death of infection).
They are just not "routine" to me. |

| Really depends on what your injecting and what with. If a horse needs hocks done 3x a year, absolutely no problem. Low motion joints are different than high motion joints . Hocks will eventually fuse and they can be injected as often as needed. Knees, coffins, fetlocks etc CANNOT be done over and over. Not with steroids anyway. And finally, you have to look at the intended use for the horse. If this horse is a tough SOB and you can run them for a few years before injections stop working then fine, just know what your getting into. If your goal is to make the NFR and you can do that in 2 years, good! If your goal is to have a horse you can pass on to your kids when the horse is 20, well, different story. |

| She's not buying or selling, it's her personal horse. I just thought it seemed excessive that he would even project that much injecting and she thought it was fine.
Both of them said "as needed" meaning he would show discomfort before they would inject, but after looking at the x-rays he said possibly up to 3X a year and I about fell over. |
