We are thinking of getting a small LQ trailer. While we don't go hard so don't need anything huge or fancy, in addition to barrel races we will also use it for a few dog shows a year. Are thinking in the range of 8-10' shortwall, weekender-type. What are your favorite and least favorite brands? What is the most important feature for you? While we would love to save money and find a used one, seems like the used ones are still expensive. Anyone have a nice one for sale? Our local dealer sells mostly Featherlight, and that is what my BP is, they seem pretty nice. Also the Lakotas seem reasonably priced. It is a big purchase, though, so would love everyone's thoughts. Thanks!

We really like our Lakota with a 9' shortwall. You'll find a mix of reviews here with varying reasons for the reviews, some from folks who have never owned one.

Several of us haul them and we all like them. They were only just founded in 2006, so no you won't find 20 year old ones still going down the road.

New vs used is up to you - for me it came down to being able to secure better financing on a new one.

We also have a Lakota, 9' shortwall. We love it. Reasonably priced. We like the features. It can get slightly cramped when our 8 year old is with us, but that's mainly because she's a child and wants to bounce around and everything becomes a jungle gym. But it has served us well thus far.

I just bought a new Sundowner Santa Fe 3H with a 6.5' SW; probably not big enough for you, but I am a one woman show most the time. They make the same trailer with 8+ SW. They are light weight, pull nice. Interior seems quality...I haven't had it long enough to speak confidently on durability, etc...but so far I am pretty pleased.

Me to! I am a one man show and love how the trailer is made and it pulls awesome.

Walk through door is a must have! We have a 4 horse 10ft Shortwall Platinum and love it. It isn't to big to drive around either.

I just upgraded from a 2006 logan with a small lq, which taught us what we needed in the 2009 lakota we bought lol. Ours is an 11' shortwall with a 6' slide. We found an unreal deal on the Lakota and we're super happy with the quality!

Our must have list:
6 cu fridge
awning
full bathroom
dinette as opposed to couch
8 wide
hay rack

I did love the mid tack in the logan, but it was only 7 wide so I am fine with giving up the mid tack for 8 wide!

Oh I didn't add must haves!

Spring loaded dividers - my Lakota has them and I didn't realize how much I loved them until we hauled in my FIL's Elite that doesn't have them, I don't have to hold a divider back and try to unload a horse at the same time!

Walk through door and stud panel in the front stall for hauling stuff instead of a horse, and additionally the escape door locks from inside the trailer so it can be used as a mud room. I also have light switches in the bathroom so I can turn on and off my outside trailer lights from there, or from the rear of the trailer.

If I had it to do over I would have gone with the bigger fridge. Not terrible, but I usually end up with a small cooler for drinks.

I went with a table instead of a couch, that way I have room for my laptop and can negotiate vacation time and work from the road depending on the event schedule.

My personal note on slide outs - it depends on the location of the LQ door and bathroom for me. In the Lakotas I walked through I did not like that in a 9' shortwall layouts I was able to look at it was almost impossible to get from the door to the bathroom with the slide in. I wanted the bathroom to be accessible to me, I have to pee a lot and I'm not afraid to pull off on an exit or in a parking lot and use the potty! Depending on what I'm hauling in the first stall the walk through isn't always accessible. That combined with the additional $ made me choose against. I travel alone or with 1 other person usually so we didn't really need the added space.

50/50 backdoors in an 8' wide. I think if your horse won't go through a 4' opening that a 4'8" opening will make a huge difference - the extra room in the rear tack though is critical for our big generator, ropes bags, bigger roper saddles etc.
