Heeler's coat in summer months

Those of you who own heelers in the south, what's the best way to keep them cool? Mine is an outside dog. We also struggle with fleas.. I've tried everything from dips, frontline, collars, sprays, etc. but we just live in an ideal area for them & they are so bad. I've shaved her in the past & it really helped the flea control.
I've heard to not shave them but she seems more comfortable when she is.

Lots of brushing or shaving has always kept my puppies happy. SleekEZ's really work great on their short hair! Or a tool brush like it. Bravecto has always worked for us. Its a pill that you give them every 3 months. To cut down on the fleas, we always had our yard treated yearly in the spring. Obviously our pastures werent treated but we never really had a problem with fleas once we went that route along with the Bravecto.

I second the Bravecto. 2 years ago when we had a lot of rain in the spring it was really bad. Both dogs are outside, but the heeler sleeps in the mudroom. So we ended up with fleas in the house.... Tried everything OTC we could find but that didn't work. So I asked the vet and she gave me Bravecto for them. Within a week we saw a huge difference, so now I give it to them starting early in March throughout the summer. No more problems!
As for the coat, I just brush her and she seems to be alright.
