Subject: Question about a suspensory injury

I noticed my 13yr old gelding has a small fluid pocket on his front leg yesterday with a bit of heat so I took him to the vet and we ultra sounded the leg. We found no holes in the tendon but he has quite a bit of fluid around the suspensory and also looked like one very small spot along the outside edge of the tendon was not smooth (if that makes sense) vet has me sweating the leg over night, icing twice a day and am just hand walking him. He feels like it's not a big deal and once we get the fluid out of there the horse should be fine to return to full work. My question is should I be worried about a suspensory injury later on? Anyone else deal with something like this? What do you guys do to keep their legs healthy after?

Sounds like your on top of things. Just bring him back slow and train him on the types of surfaces you will be running on. I would stay away from deep or slick for a while.
ICE after every hard work out and run. It's inflammation buster #1.

Since it's not a complete tear and just a sprain, I wouldn't be too worried about it. The main thing is to get your horse in tip top shape before returning to compete. Bring the horse back slow and don't rush things. I like to use Back on Track before workouts and races and also overnight. After workouts or a run try to ice the leg or I also like to use a poultice!

Thanks guys. My vet feels like we should be ok to go back to work after about another week and that I should be able to go to a race in two weeks, does that seem normal for recovery time? I'm going to have another ultrasound done first but just seems like a pretty quick time frame.
