| I think you'll get a variety of answers based on individual programs.
I personally don't like foaling after May because of the hot temps in our area. Further north seems like they foal later to avoid the snow/cold early in the year. And programs that are raising foals for aged-event competition usually try to breed as early in the year as possible. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I am in Wy so May is ideal. We miss most of our nastiest spring storms that way, June is ok but I don't prefer it. Buyers tend to shy away from weanlings born in June, but if you keep them over to 2's no one would even know. |

As long as it takes---personally, I will take a late foal rather than no foal then try catching the mare back up on foal heats. |

| Until I get them bred. Most stallion owners stop breeding/shipping the middle of June. That will give you a late May baby. It is kind of hard to get one in foal when the breeding facility is sending you semen that has nothing in it. Zilch, Zero, Nada. I think their stallion quit before they did! |

| The vet struggled last year..... We finally got our mare bred July 1st and currently waiting on our Slick By Design foal. Fingers crossed all goes as planned and we can catch her on her foal heat less than a month from now. I am not interested in the futurity route and our weather is fairly mild so as long as we weren't making a July baby when it can get warm here we were comfortable with a late breeding. |

Location: Texas | ideally i get everyone in foal for april babies at the latest... but, we are breeding older mares so I'm taking what I can get.
I haven't even tried to breed one of mine yet this year.. she foaled 4/30/17 and I skipped her foal heat on purpose.. Finally got around to checking her yesterday and she was just out of heat. So... I haven't decided do I push for getting her bred or do I just use the rebreed next year.
I'll be checking two others next week... one I don't think will be bred and the other I have a decent hope for her catching |

Location: Peg-Leg Julia Grimm | I'm ready to be done the end of June. Tired. I had 4 mares foal in May. So just now getting chaotic with breeding them all back. Some I'm short cycling, one I'm going to flush and try foal heat. |

This. I have one in foal for a late June baby. Not ideal but better than feeding an open mare all year. |

Location: SE Missouri | I have four getting bred right now even though I prefer April babies! One should breed today actually. I've decided if they aren't bred by June 8, I'm picking them up. We can get so stinking hot and humid.
One is bred to a race horse and I should have already had her up to the vet but work was too chaotic. I'm hoping she breeds next. I'm kicking myself on that one and she really should have had an early baby. Ugh...
Shawne Bug Leo should be rec'd today. That still leaves Lions share of Fame, Dashin Dynamo, and Brimmerton to go! |
