Location: Texas | All too often I hear people say, 'Happy Memorial Day!', as they head into their three day weekends with plans of getting together with family and friends and having a few spirits and some delicious grilled food. While there's nothing wrong with that at all, it truly irks me when people repeatedly treat the day as happy, or spend their time thanking living veterans for their service. Memorial Day is set aside to honor and remember the Fallen who paid the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives, so that everyone can go about their day to day activities, so that they may be free to do as they please when they please. I'm not going to spend too much time on my soap box.. I know that there are board members here who have had family, friends, brothers, sisters.. who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Please know that you're in my thoughts, my prayers. That being said, as we all head into Memorial Day, please take a second to say a prayer for the family and friends of the Fallen, and say a prayer for the Fallen themselves, and please never forget that Freedom is never free. | |

Words are so insufficient, their sacrifice is beyond measure. Prayers for the families are all those who serve. | |

Location: The Republic of Texas | My husband (12 years active army, now in reserves) also says most soliders take offense if you tell them thank you on Memorial day because they have lost so many brothers and sisters. He tells people, this is not his day (that is what veteran'so day is for). Something I never really understood until I married my soldier. | |

Location: North Dakota | I just had this conversation with a friend this morning. She text me a picture of a big bbq potluck they were getting ready for at her friends place in TX. I told her that looked nice and sounded like a good lunch.. and she asked what I was doing with my extra day on this long weekend and I said I am standing outside in the pouring rain and 20 mph winds as a service is done in honor of the 29 military men and women who are laid to rest at the cemetery including my grandpa and two uncles who dedicated their lives to serving this country.
They have a service every year at all our local cemeteries in my area. Not sure if they do that all over the country or not. What always gets me is every year that I can remember since I was kid it is always raining and windy as they read the names of all the service men and women.. the wind just blows. It is eery but also comforting. Makes me feel as though they are there with all us as the names are read, the guns are fired and the trumpet is played in their honor.
My brother is in the Army and he too does not like to be told thank you. He reminds all our friends and family this day is not for him but for those you have paid the ultimate price.

This is true. My son is active duty Special Operations Forces Soldier.
?Today is not about him and I hope and pray it never will be.
