How long do they typically take to appear? Saddle fit really well this spring but mare has since lost 200 or 300 lbs since she's actually in shape for once in her life. The mare has been off for the past week and they showed up 2-3 days into her "vacation". I'm thinking the saddle is too wide now? There were never any weird sweat patterns or bad behavior to indicate it was no longer fitting.

See I have an older Stoney rope saddle that looks like it fits PERFECT.  Then 3 rides later I've got some roaning on the wither on the shoulder.  The heck?  I quit riding in it.  Might also be too wide.  Interested to see the replies.  I rode with a 7/8 5 Star and and a thin doubled up Navajo.

I have been riding with a 7/8" 5 star as well. I bought it last winter and started using it this spring. Last fall I used a 3/4" but the mare was much fatter.

It is definately due to saddle fit and too much padding causing pressure and nerve damage. For example a 6 3/4 gullet saddle, add a 7/8 pad and another 1/2 for a thin blanket takes up double the thickess in the gullet area and under the bars.
